One of Yorkshire’s vice presidents David Warner, who used to cover Yorkshire for the Bradford Telegraph and Argus and York Press sent us this note yesterday.

If the Metro Bank Cup quarter and semi-final results play out right over the next few days it will be Roses all the way for Yorkshire and Lancashire.

It was way back in 1963 that the birth of the Gillette Cup signalled the start of competitive one-day county cricket, and in the 63 years since then the White and Red Rose clubs have never so far met in a knockout final.

But that will all change over the coming few days if Yorkshire beat Nottinghamshire Outlaws at York today and at the same time Lancashire overcome Durham at Emirates Old Trafford. That sequence would leave Yorkshire to face Leicestershire at Grace Road on Sunday in one semi-final, while the other would see Lancashire battle it out with Middlesex at Radlett.

And if these results go the right way then there will be cheering on both sides of the Pennines come Sunday evening and a bumper gate for the final at Trent Bridge on September 20 would be virtually guaranteed.

One person who would dearly love this to happen is Chris Hassell, who at various times in his career was in charge at Lancashire before taking on the chief executive’s role with Yorkshire. It was the one fixture above all others that he wanted to be closely involved in but it never happened.

The other quarter is taking place at Emirates Old Trafford between Lancashire and Durham. The winners face Middlesex at Radlett on Sunday.

Yorkshire finished second in Group B to Nottinghamshire’s third in A.

Both come into this fixture on the back of final day group wins on Tuesday; Yorkshire at Essex, Nottinghamshire at Surrey.

We’re all set to go at 11am at a venue which has already seen Yorkshire win twice in this campaign. They beat Worcestershire and then Durham, both convincingly.
