Live: Somerset v Yorkshire Men, Rothesay CC, Day Three

We have reached day three of Yorkshire's Rothesay County Championship clash with Somerset at Taunton, where the hosts are 391-6. Follow our blog for updates throughout the day.

Play abandoned for the day

Unfortunately that is it for day three here at Taunton.

No change in the scene

The covers are firmly in place, and it’s looking more and more likely that we will not see any more play today.

RAIN: Yorkshire 17-0, 2 overs

Oh no.

Yorkshire make a brisk start to their first innings, but the rain has returned.

Fin Bean 6, Adam Lyth 4.

Taunton

It’s a much brighter scene at Taunton now than when John Heald was snapping away earlier.

All set to go

Yorkshire will open with Fin Bean and Adam Lyth, as usual.

Josh Davey has the new ball for Somerset as the visitors reply to 441-6 declared.

We have 43 overs to bowl today.

Restart 3.20pm

Taunton

We will be getting going again in just under half-an-hour’s time.

There will be 43 overs remaining in the day.

Tea at 3pm

Umpires Rob Bailey and Mark Newell have called for tea in just under half an hour.

The ground-staff are taking the covers off at the moment, so fingers crossed we see something later on.

Rain stops and umpires inspect

The umpires Rob Bailey and Mark Newell have just been-it into the middle to have a look, with the rain having passed through here at the County Ground.

We await news.

No play at Taunton Vale

Down the road, where Yorkshire’s seconds are playing Somerset, there will be no play on day three.

Somerset are 19-0 replying to Yorkshire’s 465-9 declared.

It continues to rain here at Taunton, though not too hard.

Rain continues to fall

As we approach the end of the lunch break, there’s been no change in the scene, although it isn’t coming down quite as hard as it was half an hour ago.

Would you believe it

Just as the players were about to return to the field, it started raining again.

We won’t be starting at 12.10pm, unfortunately.

Lunch will be taken at 12.30pm.

Somerset have declared

Somerset have pulled out of their first innings on 441-6, and we have 78 overs remaining in the day.

12.10pm restart

Good news from the umpires.

Covers coming off

Umpires Bailey and Newell have just been out into the middle, and the good news is that the covers are coming off.

The rain has stopped.

We await news of a resumption.

Raining hard here

The rain is coming down very steadily here at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

We may well be in for quite a delay.

RAIN: Somerset 441-6, 127 overs

Somerset have added 50 runs in just over half an hour this morning to close in on 450.

Kasey Aldridge 42 and Ben Green 33.

Somerset 416-6, 124th over

Kasey Aldridge has 36 and Ben Green 18.

Matthew Revis and Dom Bess are in operation for Yorkshire.

Signs of Somerset aggression in the opening 20 minutes or so of play.

Up and running

Somerset are batting on, which is a significant surprise. They are 391-6.

Matthew Revis has the ball this morning.

Play set to start on time

All set to go at 10.30am for day three.

Good news...

After some overnight rain and bit more this morning, the covers are off and the players are warming up.

As things stand, it’s looking promising for a 10.30am start.

Good morning...

From the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton.

It’s a damp start to day three here in the West Country, where there’s rain in the air.

At the moment, it’s nothing too drastic. However, if you believe the forecast for today – and tomorrow, in fact – we may be in for some frustration.

When play does begin – hopefully at 10.30am – it will be interesting to see what happens because Somerset desperately need to win this game to keep alive their slim hopes of winning the Championship title.

At 391-6, it would be no surprise to see them declare overnight.

Realistically, they’re not going to lose the game from here. Even if we do get a decent amount of play over the next two, you’d expect a delay or two somewhere to cut say 20-30 overs from the allocation. That puts them in somewhat of a risk-free position. They simply have to take 20 wickets.

For Yorkshire, a draw here would be no disaster given they started the week with a 12-point cushion over second-bottom Durham.

You can read our match report and reaction piece – the latter with bowling coach Mick Lewis – via the embedded X posts above.

There is also a piece with Sterre Kalis which has just been published, the first of two articles – including a preview on Friday, as we build up to Sunday’s Metro Bank One-Day Cup final for Yorkshire’s women. Kalis talks about that final and how she has enjoyed a busy summer which sees her approach 50 competitive appearances. That’s available via the link above.

Enjoy the day.

Bygones, 1986: Kevin Sharp's recollections as Sussex beaten by one wicket

Cards on the table. Kevin Sharp doesn’t remember too much about the game we have chosen for this latest bygones piece ahead of Yorkshire’s home fixture with Sussex at Headingley. But it’s entirely understandable given the one-wicket win over the Martlets at the same venue in 1986 came amidst a season which only saw the county finish 10th in the County Championship.
