Live: Rothesay County Championship – Yorkshire Men vs Hampshire Day 3

Live coverage as Yorkshire Men face Hampshire in the Rothesay County Championship for the opening day of the 2025 cricket season.

Hampshire win by five wickets

Hampshire complete the win with a little under 20 overs remaining in the day.

They claim 19 points to our three.

Plenty of positives following the early collapse to 121 all out on day one.

Yorkshire face Worcestershire at Headingley on Friday.

Hampshire 147-5, 39.2 overs

Tom Prest has been bowled by Dom Bess, 57.

Bess claims a third wicket, but it’s too little too late with Hampshire needing only one to win. Ben Brown in now alongside Dawson on 17.

Prest reaches his half-century

It’s all but over here at the Utilita Bowl.

Tom Prest (56) has reached his fifty off 64 balls and has shared an unbroken half-century stand with fifth-wicket partner Liam Dawson, who has 17.

At 141-4, Hampshire need only seven to win.

Hampshire closing in

Hampshire have moved to 114-4, needing 34 more.

Tom Prest has hit three boundaries since tea to confidently move to 33.

All set for the final session of the match

We’re set for a resumption after tea, and it would take something quite remarkable to take this game into a fourth day.

Dom Bess has the ball in his hand, with Hampshire 86-4 chasing 148.

Tea: Hampshire are 86-4, needing 62 more

Yorkshire continue to fight hard in Southampton as they bid to dig themselves out of the early hole created by being bowled out for 121. Dom Bess and Jack White have struck twice apiece.

Tom Prest and Liam Dawson, 18 and 0, are charged with advancing Hampshire’s cause.

Hampshire 86-4, 25.5 overs

Fletcha Middleton lbw Dom Bess, 38.

Pinned in front on the back foot as he tried to play to leg.

Liam Dawson is in alongside Tom Prest, who has 18.

Hampshire need 62 more to win.

Hampshire 60-3, 18.3 overs

Toby Albert caught Jonny Bairstow bowled Jack White, 5.

Now then. White has two wickets in quick succession. Yorkshire have a glimmer of a chance here. Hampshire need 89 more to win.

Fletcha Middleton 30, Tom Prest has just come in.

Hampshire 54-2, 16.4 overs

Nick Gubbins lbw Jack White, 5.

The left-hander has been pinned in front as he played back. Toby Albert comes to the crease and joins Fletcha Middleton, who has 29.

Hampshire 47-1, 14 overs

Dom Bess has bowled Mark Stoneman, 11.

Bess strikes in his first over as the former England left-hander tries to go over the leg-side and has his leg-stump rocked back.

Success for Yorkshire following a couple of dropped catches. They’re going to need a couple more wickets quickly to have any hopes, with Hampshire needing 101 more to win.

Nick Gubbins in now.

Yorkshire need a wicket or two

We’re already at the stage of thinking that Yorkshire need to break through or else the game is getting away from them.

Hampshire have reached 27-0 in the 10th over.

And we’ve just had a dropped catch off George Hill. Mark Stoneman on 4 has been dropped at mid-wicket.

Jack White has now switched ends to replace Ben Coad, who has just left the field after his fifth over.

Hampshire's chase is underway

Hampshire 6-0 in the second over of their chase of 148.

Ben Coad and Jack White have taken the new ball, with Hampshire’s pursuit led by Mark Stoneman and Fletcha Middleton.

Yorkshire 275 all out, Hampshire require 148 to win

Adam Lyth caught Kyle Abbott bowled Brett Hampton, 106.

That’s a fabulous innings from Lyth, who has skied to mid-on trying to hit his first six with the field up late in the 100th over.

Yorkshire are 275 all out, with Jack White 2 not out.

Hampshire require 148, and we have a minimum of 59 overs remaining in the day.

Yorkshire 272-9, 97.4 overs

Ben Coad has been caught behind off Brett Hampton’s seam for 9.

Yorkshire’s lead is 144, with Lyth on 105 and Jack White having just come to the crease.

HUNDRED FOR LYTH!!!

Adam Lyth

Simply sensational from Lyth. A very different knock to the ones we’re used to from our opener. He has been unable to dominate, but he’s fought so hard for the Yorkshire cause. 263 balls with 11x4s.

He now has 104 out of 270-8, and the lead is 142. Yorkshire edging their way back into this contest.

Lyth starts the afternoon in fine style

Adam Lyth has moved to 95 having driven the first ball of the afternoon down the ground for four off Brett Hampton.

He did the same at the start of the day as well.

Yorkshire 259-8, leading by 131. Ben Coad has 6.

Lunch: Yorkshire 255-8, leading by 127.

Yorkshire have had another decent session as they try and pull this game out of the fire.

Adam Lyth has reached 91 not out and has Ben Coad with him on 6. Another 40-50 runs would give the visitors a real chance.

Ben Cliff and Dom Bess were the wickets to fall this morning, both to Kyle Abbott.

Kent claim the first win of the summer

In Division Two, Kent have beaten Northamptonshire by 145 runs at Wantage Road.

Far from the ideal start for new Northamptonshire coach Darren Lehmann.

Yorkshire have posted the highest score of the match

Yorkshire are 250-8, leading by 122.

Ben Coad has just been dropped at second slip by Tom Prest off Brad Wheal, whose chance of a five-for goes begging for now. Coad has 5 and Lyth on 87.

Yorkshire 239-8, 86.5 overs

Dom Bess b Kyle Abbott, 0.

Yorkshire have a lead of 111 with only two wickets remaining. Ben Coad is in to join Adam Lyth, who has 81.

Yorkshire 229-7, 80.5 overs

Ben Cliff caught second slip by Tom Prest off Kyle Abbott, 20.

The new ball has done the trick for Hampshire five balls into the 81st over. Adam Lyth remains, on 72, and has been joined at the crease by Dom Bess.

Yorkshire’s lead stands at 101.

Yorkshire 228-6, leading by 100

Important marker for Yorkshire, who have a lead of 100 and counting. Adam Lyth 72 and Ben Cliff 20 have shared 41 for the seventh wicket.

Big moment coming up, however. We’re through 80 overs of the innings, so the new ball is due – and has been taken by captain Ben Brown. Kyle Abbott has returned to the attack.

Lyth standing firm

Adam Lyth

Adam Lyth is eyeing another Championship century. He has 67 out of 217-6, a lead of 89. Importantly, Ben Cliff has 14. These two have seen off the early threat of Sonny Baker.

200 up for Yorkshire

Encouraging start to the morning for Yorkshire. Adam Lyth and Ben Cliff have both found the boundary this morning, and the score has moved to 201-6, a lead of 73.

Lyth 64 and Cliff has 6.

Up and running with a Lyth boundary

Ideal start for Yorkshire as Adam Lyth pushes the first ball of the day from Kyle Abbott back down the ground for four. Lovely shot. He then gets a single next ball and moves to 62 out of 194-6. Yorkshire’s lead is 66.

Ben Cliff has 1 and is about to take strike for the first time today.

Banton brilliance

Tom Banton

Tom Banton made history at the Cooper Associates Ground in Taunton yesterday as Somerset assumed a position of dominance on day two of their Division One clash with Worcestershire.

The 26-year-old batter made the highest first-class score in the county’s history, his 344 surpassing the 342 made by Justin Langer against Surrey at Guildford in 2006.

The right-hander faced 381 balls, struck 53 fours and a six and batted for just over eight hours. He became only the eighth Somerset player to register a triple century and the first since James Hildreth in 2009. Somerset closed day two on 637-6 in reply to their visitors’ first-innings 154 all out.

Good morning from the Utilita Bowl

Utilita Bowl D2

It’s another lovely sunny day in Southampton, where Yorkshire have their backs to the wall in this opening round Division One fixture.

Adam Lyth is going to be key in getting the White Rose up to a target to work with. You would think 150 plus would do that. They are currently 61 ahead with four wickets remaining, at 189-6. Lyth will return to the crease this morning on 57.

Lyth was admirably patient yesterday against a challenging attack on a slow pitch, and we were looking at some stats in the press box yesterday.

Without being able to 100 percent confirm it, we were pretty confident that in reaching his fifty off 176 balls it would have been his slowest ever Championship fifty.

Immediately, he will have nightwatchman Ben Cliff for company, with Dom Bess, Ben Coad and Jack White to come. All three of those will be central to Yorkshire’s victory bid given their bowling expertise.

Fingers crossed the lads can produce something special today.
