Live: Rothesay County Championship – Yorkshire Men v Nottinghamshire, Day 1

Yorkshire face Division One leaders Nottinghamshire at Headingley in a seventh-round match which marks the halfway point in this Rothesay County Championship campaign. Follow this page for live updates throughout day one.

Close: Yorkshire 10-2, 12 overs

We’re replying to Nottinghamshire’s 228 all out.

James Wharton 6 and Jack White yet to score.

George Hill stood out with 5-40 for Yorkshire.

Yorkshire 9-2, 10.2 overs

Fin Bean caught behind Kyle Verreynne bowled Mohammad Abbas, 2.

Oh no, Yorkshire in some early bother.

Nightwatchman Jack White in.

Two overs remain in the day

Yorkshire are 8-1 after 10 overs in reply to 228. No surprise that defence has been the order of the day in the final hour.

Fin Bean 2 and James Wharton 4.

Yorkshire 2-1, 2.2 overs

Adam Lyth caught behind Mohammad Abbas, 2.

Yorkshire lose their first wicket, and James Wharton is in alongside Fin Bean, who is yet to score.

Nottinghamshire 228 all out, 81.2 overs

Dillon Pennington bowled Jack White, 15.

Bowled having a big swing, handing White a second wicket. Yorkshire will face 12 overs before close.

Hill 5-40, White 2-23 and Thompson 3-77.

Nottinghamshire 208-9, 76.3 overs

Joe Clarke caught Jordan Thompson bowled George Hill, 64.

Brilliantly caught on the run by Thompson at third-man following a reverse scoop from Clarke.

Hill has five wickets for the third game running. Superb.

Nottinghamshire 197-8, 76.2 overs

Brett Hutton caught Adam Lyth bowled George Hill, 0.

Caught at second slip, and Yorkshire are hitting back. Hill has a fourth. Joe Clarke remains on 55.

Nottinghamshire 197-7, 73 overs

Liam Patterson-White caught behind Harry Duke bowled George Hill, 4.

Much more regulation than Duke’s previous catch. Hill matches Thompson’s three-wicket haul.

Nottinghamshire 192-6, 71.1 overs

Lyndon James caught behind Harry Duke bowled Jordan Thompson, 29.

Top-edged pull and Duke on the run towards a kind of short fine-leg takes a good catch. Big wicket that, ending a 71-stand with Joe Clarke, who remains on 54.

Bennett ton keeps Zimbabwe fighting

Brian Bennett, Zimbabwe’s opener, is 139 not out on day two at Trent Bridge, where the visitors are 246-5 in the 54th over, trailing by 319. An impressive effort indeed, especially considering Bennett has only faced 140 balls.

Joe Clarke reaches his fifty

Clarke follows Ben Slater to the milestone, getting there off 123 balls with eight fours. Nottinghamshire have moved to 188-5 in the 27th over, with Lyndon James 29. These two have shared 67 for the sixth wicket, a stand which is damaging Yorkshire.

Tea. Nottinghamshire 178-5, 64 overs

Nottinghamshire lose three wickets in the session but will be chuffed with their progress. They have advanced thanks to Joe Clarke’s 47 and 24 for Lyndon James. They have shared an unbroken 57 for the sixth wicket.

Two wickets for George Hill and one for Jordan Thompson in the session.

Nottinghamshire ending the afternoon well

Joe Clarke 33 and Lyndon James 21 have shared 40 for the sixth wicket, taking their side to 161-5. We’re into the final five overs of the afternoon as Jordan Thompson currently searches for his third wicket.

George Hill

Nottinghamshire 121-5, 46.1 overs

Kyle Verreynne bowled George Hill, 1.

Yorkshire on a bit of a roll as Hill strikes for the second time in as many overs. He has two for the day and 29 for the season.

Nottinghamshire 119-4, 44.4 overs

Jack Haynes bowled George Hill, 9.

Haynes tries to leave alone one angled back in from Hill and is bowled. Kyle Verreynne is now alongside Joe Clarke, who has 16.

Sutherland running the drinks

Will Sutherland is currently delivering a drink around the boundary edge to Jack White.

Yorkshire’s new Blast overseas signing has been with the county for the last few days ahead of the start of that competition next week.

Nottinghanshire 102-3, 38 overs

Ben Slater bowled Jordan Thompson, 52.

Two balls after left-handed Slater reaches his fifty off 107 balls, he is bowled by Thompson. Jack Haynes in alongside Joe Clarke, who has 12.

Slater closing in on a fifty

Ben Slater has 44 out of 94-2 in the 37th over. Joe Clarke also has 12, with Ben Coad and Jordan Thompson in operation.

Afternoon underway

Ben Coad is bowling the first over of the afternoon. Notts are 67-2 in the 31st over.

Lunch: Nottinghamshire 67-2, 30 overs

Ben Slater has 31 and Joe Clarke yet to get off the mark.

Jack White and Jordan Thompson with a wicket at either end of the session.

Notts will be the happier of the two teams at present, but things can change quickly. 75-4, for example, has a different complexion.

Nottinghamshire 65-2, 27.5 overs

Freddie McCann caught George Hill bowled Jordan Thompson, 28.

We’ve seen two superb catches this morning. The first was the more eye-catching from Wharton – one handed at point. This from Hill was arguably just as good, low down to his right at first slip. Two-handed.

That ends a 56-run stand with Ben Slater, who has 29.

Nottinghamshire 55-1 after 23 overs

Ben Slater and Freddie McCann have advanced their side into a decent position as we reach the final half hour of the morning. They have 27 and 20 apiece. Still plenty happening for Yorkshire, but still not the reward they’d have wanted.

James Wharton

James Wharton takes the catch at point to remove Notts’ captain Haseeb Hameed this morning.

Nottinghamshire 29-1 after 17 overs

George Hill and Jordan Thompson are into the attack. Ben Slater has 13 of 32-1 in the 18th over. Not quite sure how Notts are still one down. But they are and will be chuffed with their position so far.

England declare on 565-6

Harry Brook

Harry Brook has just been bowled by Blessing Muzarabani for 58, signalling an end to the England first innings at Trent Bridge.

Meanwhile, here at Headingley, Notts are 17-1. They could easily be 17-4. Ben Slater has 9 and Freddie McCann 0.

Plenty in this pitch

Lbw shouts, plays and misses, there’s plenty happening so far. Nottinghamshire 12-1 in the ninth over.

Yorkshire 9-1, 5.4 overs

Haseeb Hameed caught James Wharton bowled Jack White, 6.

Stunning catch diving away to his right at point. Yorkshire make the breakthrough in grand style. One-handed low down. Fabulous.

Freddie McCann is in to join Ben Slater on 2.

Ben Coad has the new ball...

We’re up and running at Headingley. Haseeb Hameed and Ben Slater opening for Nottinghamshire.

Ben Coad starts with a maiden against Hameed, and now Jack White to Slater.

Good morning...

Good morning from Headingley, where the sun’s out ahead of our Rothesay County Championship clash with Division One leaders Nottinghamshire, who have started 2025 superbly thanks to three wins, a defeat and two draws.

We’re all set for an 11am start, before which Dom Bess will toss the coin. He will captain the side this week.

Yorkshire are hoping to reach the halfway-mark in the four-day campaign in better shape than they currently find themselves.

Having been beaten at Surrey last week – their third defeat – they sit second-bottom in the table. But that ladder’s incredibly tight. A win here will give them a significant lift heading into the start of the Vitality Blast, which comes around next Friday evening at home to Darren Lehmann’s Northamptonshire.

Both sides head into this fixture on the back of a defeat.

As aforementioned, Yorkshire were beaten at the Kia Oval, while Notts were on the wrong end of a high-scoring contest with Durham at the Banks Homes Riverside.

Yorkshire are minus regular skipper Jonny Bairstow and fellow wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Tattersall, meaning a return to Championship action for Harry Duke. Ironically, his last outing in this format came whilst on loan at Anthony McGrath’s Essex around this time last year.

Dawid Malan has returned from a groin injury to play.

On the bowling front, the county will be without either of their overseas seamers, Jordan Buckingham (hip flexor) and Ben Sears (ankle). They have both been ruled out and finish their current spells with the county.
