Live: Rothesay County Championship – Surrey v Yorkshire Men, Day 3

Yorkshire's men are in day three action against Surrey at the Kia Oval, bidding to fight their way back into this Rothesay County Championship clash with the county champions. Follow this blog for live updates.

Close: Yorkshire 185-6, trailing by 72

After some promise either through the heart of the evening session, it’s a frustrating end to the day with the loss of those three quick wickets.

Jonny Bairstow remains on 64 and Matthew Revis is with him on 3.

Yorkshire 169-6, 57.5 overs

Two wickets in as many balls. Tom Lawes has removed George Hill caught at first slip and night-watchman Jordan Buckingham lbw. After the promise of Wharton and Bairstow, Surrey have this game by the throat once again. Matthew Revis in now.

Yorkshire 167-4, 55.5 overs

James Wharton bowled Matthew Fisher, 67.

An in-swinger does for Wharton, ending an 84-run stand inside 17 overs with Jonny Bairstow, who has 52. The deficit is 90.

George Hill has arrived at the crease.

Bairstow reaches a 39-ball fifty

Jonny Bairstow is counter-attacking superbly. He has hit 7x4s and 2x6s, helping Yorkshire to 163-3. The stand with James Wharton (65) has reached 80 in 13 overs.

Bairstow takes on Fisher

Surrey have reverted the short-ball tactic they were using before tea, and Bairstow is having none of it.

He has just pulled Matthew Fisher over long-leg for back-back sixes and has 49 out of 162-3, a deficit of 95. Super stuff from the skipper.

Wharton 50

James Wharton

James Wharton has reached his fifty off 103 balls with 5x4s.

Yorkshire are now 131-3 after 47 overs, trailing by 126.

Wharton, 56, now has four fifties in this summer’s Championship, and he has shared an unbroken 50 with his captain Jonny Bairstow, who has 30.

We have 20 overs remaining in the day.

Yorkshire 83-3, 38.5 overs

Jonny Tattersall caught Dom Sibley bowled Jordan Clark, 12.

Caught at second slip, ending a 52-run stand with James Wharton, who remains on 37.

Felt like Jonny deserved more for his endeavours there than his 12. One Jonny replaces another. Bairstow in now. The deficit is 174.

Up and running after tea

Yorkshire are 69-2 in the early stages of the evening, with James Wharton 27 and Jonny Tattersall 11.

The deficit is 188.

Tea: Yorkshire 67-2, 32 overs

Surrey have gone short at these two in the last half hour or so, but with no joy.

We have 32 overs remaining in the day.

Wharton and Tattersall double Yorkshire's total

James Wharton and Jonny Tattersall are going nicely here at the Kia Oval as we approach tea.

They have taken the score from 31-2 to 63-2. Wharton has 24 and Tattersall 8. We’re through 28 overs of the second innings and have four to bowl before tea.

Yorkshire 43-2 in the 21st over

Jordan Clark and Tom Lawes are in operation for the hosts. We have just over 43 overs remaining in the day.

It's the Bears for Sterre and co

Sterre Kalis

Yorkshire will face Warwickshire Bears in the quarter-finals of the Vitality County T20 Cup at Weetwood on Saturday.

Sterre Kalis will face the county she is currently on loan with.

We actually caught up with Sterre earlier to preview that game, and she chatted from home just before setting off to Arundel, where she will play for Warwickshire tomorrow against Hampshire in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup. She then returns to Yorkshire colours on Saturday to face the Bears.

Devon giving the Bears a scare

Yorkshire’s next opponents in the Vitality County T20 Cup will be decided over the next couple of hours. The expectation is that Warwickshire will beat Devon, but maybe not.

A much-changed Warwickshire side are 87-5 in the 14th over against the Tier 3 side.

Laying down the Lawes

Tom Lawes has come in and played some eye-catching shots – five boundaries – in 28 out of 488-9, a home lead of 233.

Jordan Thompson and Matthew Revis are the ones charged with finishing this innings off.

Surrey 464-9, 132.5 overs

The Surrey lead is 209.

Nathan Smith lbw George Hill, 42.

The New Zealander has been trapped lbw by one which seemed to nip back from Hill, who claims his fifth wicket.

Surrey lead by 190. Jordan Clark 63 is joined by Tom Lawes.

Thompson and Hill into the attack

Jordan Thompson and George Hill are searching for the eighth Surrey wicket.

Jordan Clark 60 and Nathan Smith 32 have shared 76 for the eighth wicket.

Maiden from Ben Coad to Jordan Clark, 41, to start the day.

That’s the end of the bonus points, too. Surrey claim six points across the two first innings and Yorkshire three.

Jonny Tattersall is keeping wicket again, with Jonny Bairstow at mid-on.

Good morning from the Smoke!

It’s another overcast start to the day ahead of day three at the Kia Oval, but we saw that yesterday and by the time 11am came along the sun was out.

Surrey will resume on 384-7 in their first innings, leading by 129.

We’re through 109 overs in the innings, so there’s one left to accrue bonus points. Will Surrey go after the 16 runs they need to get to 400? Yorkshire need two wickets for a third bowling point.

Jordan Clark will resume on 41 with Nathan Smith on 9.

The visitors will likely be without Jordan Buckingham this morning having sustained a hip injury during the afternoon session yesterday. He didn’t take the field after tea.

Yorkshire will have to bat long second time around in order to secure a positive outcome in this fixture.

Yesterday was a busy one as far as Yorkshire Cricket is concerned, with the county’s women beating Essex Eagles in the third round of the Vitality County T20 Cup at Headingley by 11 runs defending a target of 189. Sterre Kalis with 83 not out and Maddie Ward with 43 not out and a wicket shone.

Yorkshire will face either Devon or Warwickshire at Weetwood next Saturday in the quarter-finals. Those two counties play their third round tie today. The White Rose are one game from Finals Day.

You can read our match report and reaction from the Oval in the embedded X posts above, as you can our report from Headingley.
