“If he gets in, he will be really good to watch"

Abdullah Shafique

Liam Holgate is a performance analyst at Yorkshire. Earlier this summer, he went to the Pakistan Super League to work for Islamabad United. His side came up against new White Rose signing Abdullah Shafique, who won that title with Lahore Qalandars.

Liam has given Yorkshire fans an idea of what they can expect from Shafique over the next four games.

“He’s one who will take the game on. Pakistan, at the moment, are going through a resurgence where the likes of Babar and Rizwan have been told they have to increase their strike-rates and change their game. And that’s a move which will play right into Abdullah’s hands.

“He comes out, usually at three, and tries to take the game down.

“When he played against us at Islamabad United, he got two fifties.

“One of those games, in particular, he was lethal against us.

“One of his biggest strengths is that he will find width from anywhere.

“You could go into a meeting and say, ‘No width’. But you’d bowl balls that weren’t width and he’d turn them into width.

“He’s sensational at getting what he wants from the crease and making it happen.

“As you find, with most players from Pakistan, he’s very dangerous against spin.

“He has two games at Headingley, and what do you do as a bowler because it’s short straight and rapid square? No matter where you bowl, you are under pressure.

“If he gets in, he will be really good to watch.

“He’s a great fielder as well.

“He’s just a very good all-round cricketer.”

Good afternoon...

From Emirates Old Trafford, where it’s a glorious afternoon ahead of this evening’s blockbuster clash in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Yorkshire are in must win territory if they are to maintain their slim hopes of quarter-final qualification. Having only won three games from 10 so far, they will have to win their remaining four games and hope it’s enough for a top-four finish.

They face a Lancashire side who have won seven from 10 games and sit second in the North Group just behind Durham, who have a superior net run-rate.

Both sides come into this one on the back of defeats. Yorkshire were beaten by Derbyshire at Chesterfield on Sunday, while Lancashire were beaten by the Bears at Edgbaston on Wednesday.

Yorkshire will hand a Blast debut to Pakistan international Abdullah Shafique, who takes on overseas duties from Will O’Rourke, who has departed for international duty with New Zealand.

More about Shafique in a short while.

But you can read our preview for this game with James Wharton and Matt Milnes via the post above.

The last two games between these two counties here at Emirates Old Trafford have been washed out, meaning Yorkshire hold the whip-hand in the recent Roses battles having won in each of the last two seasons at Headingley.

With this game being televised tonight, there will be no live stream available.
