Yorkshire captain Steve Patterson said:
“It was a disappointing day in the end. It started off brightly and then a bit of a case of deja vu from there really.
“We knew it was going to be a decent surface, but we felt that if there was anything in it, it would be first morning.
“We got two early wickets and put two soft chances down after that. Realistically, they should have been 22-4 at that point. Then we drive hard from there to dominate the day.
“It didn’t happen. We gave them those chances, as I say, and as the ball became softer in the afternoon, it got harder. The pitch got slower and slower.
“We’ve let them off the hook today. We had the chance to grab it with both hands. They are a good side, as we know, and they’ve made us pay.”
6.12pm – Close Lancashire reach 288-3 from 96 overs on day one, including Jennings’ 150 not out and 104 for Croft. Two wickets for Thompson and one for Rauf.
6.10pm Jennings reaches his 150 off 280 balls with 22 fours. Lancashire 285-3 after 95 overs. Set for the final one of the day, to be bowled by Patterson.
5.47pm Six overs remain in the day. Lancashire are 266-3 in the 90th over. Jennings 137 and Vilas 4.
5.30pm WICKET Croft falls for a fine 104, trapped lbw by Rauf. Lancashire are 249-3 in the 86th.
5.10pm Croft reaches his century off 212 balls with 16×4s and 1×6s. Well played. Lancashire 236-2 in the 81st over.

4.33pm Keaton Jennings reached his hundred off 207 balls with 16×4s – his third Roses Championship hundred in as many innings. He has helped Lancashire to 205-2 in the 71st over.

Tea Report Keaton Jennings and Steven Croft have turned around the opening day of the Roses clash at Headingley and are both closing in on hundreds.
Lancashire, 12-2 this morning after losing the toss, have since advanced to reach tea at 187-2 from 64 overs.
The visitors were 53-2 from 30 overs at lunch, and more than doubled that total in the first 15 overs of the afternoon by moving to 127-2.
Jennings reached his fifty off 116 balls and Croft off 106 in back-to-back overs.
Yorkshire will rue dropping Jennings on two and 70, the first by Harry Duke off Steve Patterson this morning and the second Adam Lyth at slip off Dom Bess this afternoon. The second was much the harder of the chances.
The pair have now shared 175. Jennings will begin the evening on 87 and Croft on 81.
3.44pm – Tea Lancashire have reached 187-2 from 64 overs, batting through the session unbroken. Jennings has reached 87 and Croft 81.
3.22pm Jennings and Croft have now shared 150, taking their side to 162-2 after 57 overs. Jennings 72 and Croft 75.
Jennings has just been dropped on 70, a sharp chance at slip for Lyth following a flashed cut at Bess.
2.36pm And Croft follows him to the same milestone, off 106 balls with 9×4s. He and Jennings have now shared 103 for the third wicket. 115-2 in the 44th over.
2.32pm Jennings reaches his fifty off 116 balls with 10×4s. Lancashire 111-2 in the 43rd over.
2.11pm News of England’s new Test coach……
Brendon McCullum has been appointed.
McCullum, 40, will be in place to start his role for next month’s LV= Insurance three-match Test series against his country of birth New Zealand, which gets underway at Lord’s from 2 June, subject to obtaining the necessary work visa.
Rob Key, England’s director of cricket, said: “We are delighted to confirm Brendon as England Men’s Test Head Coach. It has been a real privilege to get to know him and understand his views and vision for the game. I believe his appointment will be good for England’s Test team.
“He has a recent history of changing cricket culture and environments for the better, and I believe he is the person to do that for England’s red-ball cricket.
“We were incredibly fortunate to have a seriously strong list of quality candidates for the post, with Brendon demonstrating he was our number one choice.”
McCullum said: “I’d like to say how pleased I am to be given this opportunity to positively contribute to England’s Test cricket set-up and move the team forward into a more successful era.

1.47pm Early stages of the afternoon, with the Yorkshire attack taken up by Thompson and Patterson. Lancashire 55-2. The sun is shining, but there is a definite chill in the air.
Lunch Report Jordan Thompson struck twice as Yorkshire stifled Lancashire’s progression during the opening morning of the Roses clash at Headingley.
Lancashire, invited to bat by Steve Patterson – his fifth successful toss in a row, were only able to reach lunch at 53-2 from 30 overs as an overcast sky made way for sunshine.
Thompson claimed both of his wickets amidst a seven-over new ball spell which cost him as many runs, Luke Wells and Josh Bohannon falling as the score slipped to 12-2 after seven overs.
Wells was caught behind by Harry Duke pushing forwards at Thompson (8) before Bohannon was trapped lbw by a superb yorker which hit the England Lions man on the boot.
Opener Keaton Jennings, dropped on two by Duke in Patterson’s first over, has started the visiting side’s recovery alongside third-wicket partner Steven Croft. They both have 21 apiece.
Haris Rauf is making his return to LV= Insurance County Championship action following a week out with a side injury.
England pair Jimmy Anderson and Joe Root have been named on the respective teams.
1.03pm – Lunch Jordan Thompson claims the morning wickets as Lancashire advance to 53-2 from 30 overs. Jennings and Croft have 21 apiece for the visitors.
12.28pm Lancashire have moved to 28-2 after 21 overs as Rauf returns in place of Patterson, Jennings holding firm on 12 and Croft has 5.
12pm Lancashire have moved to 20-2 in the 15th over. Jennings 6 and Croft 4. Loten has come into the attack to replace Thompson, who has figures of 2-7 from seven overs.
11.47am WICKET Bohannon has been trapped lbw with a super yorker from Thompson for two. It’s 12-2 after 11. Great start.
11.40am Patterson is into the attack in place of Rauf and induces an edge from Jennings (2) in his first over. Unfortunately, Duke can’t hold on. Lancashire are 12-1 after 10.
11.34am WICKET Wells feathers behind against Thompson, 8. 10-1 in the ninth over. Bohannon joins Jennings at the crease.
11.01am The first ball of the match, from Thompson, is driven for four by Wells.

Good morning from Headingley, where it is a bright start to the morning ahead of day one of the Roses clash.
Both sides head into it unbeaten, Yorkshire drawing three of four matches so far and Lancashire winning two and drawing two. Nine points separate the pair in the Division One table; Lancashire third and Yorkshire fourth.
It seems as if Haris Rauf is set to play for Yorkshire this week, returning from a week out with a side injury. Lancashire’s Pakistan fast bowler, Rauf’s compatriot, Hassan Ali has been rested however.
But Joe Root is set to face Jimmy Anderson.
Both sides drew games last week, Yorkshire at Essex, Lancashire at home to Warwickshire.
If the man below, Harry Brook, can pass 50 again this week – for the seventh time in as many innings – he would equal the Yorkshire record held by Geoff Boycott (1982), Darren Lehmann (2002) and Anthony McGrath (2010).
