Close: Surrey 42-0 replying to 255
Surrey end the opening day 209 behind. That’s a pretty good day for them, and Yorkshire are going to have to strike quickly tomorrow to get themselves back into this.
Rory Burns 27, Dom Sibley 10.
Surrey 42-0 after 12 overs
Messrs Coad, White, Hill and Buckingham have been searching for the breakthrough but have yet to find it.
Surrey will end the day in good order.
Surrey are 17-0 in the fourth over
Ben Coad and Jack White have taken the new ball, but the breakthrough has yet to come.
Rory Burns has 12 and Sibley 7.
Yorkshire 255 all out, 80.4 overs
Jordan Buckingham lbw Jordan Clark, 3.
Full ball, struck on the boot. No doubt about that one.
We have 13 overs remaining in the day.
Yorkshire feel short with 255, especially from 52-0 and 203-5. But it’s difficult to know exactly where they stand. If they bowl well in these conditions, they could be in business.
Yorkshire 251-9 in the 80th over
Yorkshire have a first batting point as Jack White drives Nathan Smith through the covers for four.
Yorkshire 247-9, 77.1 overs
Jordan Thompson caught Jason Roy bowled Tom Lawes, 30.
Top-edged pull down to long-leg. Decent catch from Roy.
Jack White in now alongside Jordan Buckingham, who has 3.
Yorkshire 239-8, 74.2 overs
Ben Coad caught and bowled Dan Lawrence, 1.
Smart catch by Lawrence going to his right. Jordan Buckingham in to join Jordan Thompson, who has 25.
Yorkshire 237-7, 72.1 overs
Jonny Bairstow caught Tom Lawes bowled Dan Lawrence, 89.
Oh no. Top-edged sweep down to deep backward square-leg. Ben Coad in to join Jordan Thompson, who has 24.
Yorkshire 237-6 in the 72nd over
Jonny Bairstow has 89 and Jordan Thompson 24. The latter has dominated a 35-run stand, including playing a lovely on drive for four just now off Tom Lawes.
Up and running after tea
Jordan Thompson has come in to join his skipper, Jonny Bairstow, who has 80.
Yorkshire 204-6 in the opening over of the evening.
Tea: Yorkshire 203-6, 64 overs
Matthew Revis caught behind Ben Foakes bowled Matthew Fisher, 19.
Revis played nicely for his 19 but can’t go on as Fisher gets a wicket with the last ball of the afternoon.
Jonny Bairstow unbeaten on 79.
Plenty in at the Oval today
Surrey have just announced a crowd of over 5,000 here today to see Yorkshire reach 194-5 after 61 overs. Jonny Bairstow has 70 of them.
Batting points
Yorkshire have played some good cricket this summer, chiefly in beating Worcestershire at Headingley and dominating Essex at Chelmsford last weekend. But one of the things they will be looking to improve is their haul of batting bonus points.
They only have seven compared to their 15 points for bowling.
With that in mind, they could do with converting their 186-5 into something substantial.
Back-to-back boundaries for Matthew Revis through backward point and cover off Dan Lawrence’s part-time off-spin. He has 17 and Jonny Bairstow 64.
Bairstow fifty

Jonny Bairstow gets there off 63 balls with 10x4s, the latest driven down the ground off Smith. Yorkshire 159-5 in the 52nd. Excellent knock.

Yorkshire 154-5, 50.5 overs
George Hill caught Dom Sibley bowled Jordan Clark, 3.
Caught at second slip throat high going across first slip. Looked to be at the second attempt too.
Matthew Revis in now alongside Jonny Bairstow, who has 49.
Yorkshire 131-4, 42.1 overs
Adam Lyth caught behind Ben Foakes bowled Nathan Smith, 55.
Meanwhile, at the other end, New Zealander Smith gets Lyth caught behind with a quick delivery which he tried to fend off but could only get a feather behind. George Hill in now alongside Bairstow.
Bairstow on the attack
Jonny Bairstow has started very nicely indeed. He has hit six fours in 30 off 32 balls.
He has helped Yorkshire to 131-3 in the 42nd over. Adam Lyth has 55. These two have put on 44 in no time.
Aside from going after quick runs in search of a declaration, like he did at Essex last weekend, we haven’t seen a real blistering knock from Jonny yet this season – you know the sort, the kind of knock where he takes the game away from an opposition in a flash. He has been very determined at the crease so far. Maybe today is the day for something different.
Adam Lyth reaches another fifty
Death, Taxes and Adam Lyth runs. Three things in life which are certain.
Yorkshire are 101-3 in the 37th over.
Lyth gets there off 117 balls with 5x4s. He has now posted six scores of 50 or more, including two hundreds, in this summer’s Rothesay County Championship.
Yorkshire 87-3, 32.5 overs
Jonny Tattersall caught behind Ben Foakes bowled Tom Lawes, 8.
That is a stunning catch from Foakes, left-handed going down leg. Tattersall tries to pull a short ball from Lawes and gloves a looping chance. Foakes sprints and dives full length and holds on one-handed.
Jonny Bairstow in now alongside Adam Lyth on 45.
Lovely from Lyth

Adam Lyth has just driven Matthew Fisher through the covers. Trademark shot. He has 44 out of 85-2 in the 33rd over.

Yorkshire 79-2 in the 30th over
Adam Lyth has 41 and Jonny Tattersall 4. Matthew Fisher is bowling the opening over of the afternoon session.
Lunch: Yorkshire 75-2 from 29 overs
It’s been pretty even so far. Having lost the toss and got through with only two down, you could argue that Yorkshire have shaded it potentially.
Adam Lyth has 38 and Jonny Tattersall 3.
Glorious early afternoon
When we arrived this morning, it was bright, but there was plenty of cloud around. There’s not one to be seen now.
It’s clear why Surrey bowled first. There’s been a good amount of movement off the pitch and through the air. Yorkshire 68-2 in the 26th over. Adam Lyth has 35 and Jonny Tattersall 1.
Yorkshire 59-2, 22.1 overs
James Wharton caught behind Ben Foakes bowled Jordan Clark, 4.
Bit of extra bounce does for Wharton.
Jonny Tattersall in now alongside Adam Lyth, who has 29.
Yorkshire 52-1, 17.5 overs
Fin Bean caught Kurtis Patterson bowled Tom Lawes, 19.
Bean edges a drive to third slip, where Surrey’s overseas Australian debutant takes the catch going to his right.
James Wharton is in now alongside Adam Lyth, who has 26.
Yorkshire 48-0 in the 16th over
Adam Lyth has moved to 22 and Fin Bean 19.
The odd alarm, but Yorkshire will be absolutely delighted with this start having been inserted.
Life for Bean
Fin Bean, on 8, is dropped by Dan Lawrence at a backward square-leg off Tom Lawes. Would have been a superb catch diving to his left. Yorkshire move to 35-0 after 12 overs. Adam Lyth has 21.
Shot!
Fin Bean drives Nathan Smith almost arrow straight down the ground for four, moving to 7. Lovely. Yorkshire 25-0 after seven overs.
Yorkshire 19-0 in the sixth over
Yorkshire will be pretty chuffed with this start. Adam Lyth has 12 and Fin Bean 3.
Interesting stat from Paul Dyson. This is the first time since 1989 that Yorkshire have batted first in six successive Championship matches at any stage of a season.

They were queuing outside the Kia Oval this morning ahead of play.

Up and running
Nathan Smith has the new ball for Surrey.
Adam Lyth and Fin Bean opening the batting.
Yorkshire 6-0, with a Lyth boundary glanced to fine-leg.
Surrey won and bowl
Rory Burns has won the toss and opted to bowl first.
That means Yorkshire have batted first in all six Championship matches so far this season.
Yorkshire: Lyth, Bean, Wharton, Tattersall, Bairstow c&w, Hill, Revis, Thompson, Coad, Buckingham, White.
Matthew Fisher is in the Surrey team.
The pitch

There is a definite green tinge to the pitch.
From chatting to a few locals, it’s likely to do a bit early and flatten out as the game goes on.

Good morning...
Good morning from the Kia Oval, where the sun is out once again.
Yorkshire are aiming for their second win in game number six of the summer having come oh so close last time out against Essex at Chelmsford on Monday.
Surrey have also played five and won one, though they have drawn the other four compared to Yorkshire’s two draws and two defeats.
They drew against Warwickshire at Edgbaston in the last round, just avoiding having to follow-on in the process.
Matthew Fisher is in a Surrey squad which doesn’t include the talismanic seamer Dan Worrall.
For Yorkshire, Ben Sears isn’t fit enough to take part due to an ankle injury, which is a significant blow. Last weekend, the coaching staff were fully expecting him to play in this one.
Our preview is available to read via the embedded X post above. There are thoughts from Jonny Bairstow, Anthony McGrath and George Hill.
