“I wasn’t (expecting to play) until yesterday. Unfortunately Matthew Waite has pulled out with an injury.
“I spoke to Andrew Gale midweek about the situation and moving forwards with squads. He said I would be in the squad and would get my chance depending on the fitness of Waitey and Matthew Fisher.
“Unfortunately for Waitey he’s injured, which has meant I’ve stepped in. Thankfully I’ve done a decent job so far, and hopefully that can continue.
“It’s the type of wicket where if you put it in that area, you are going to get chances, as we found out.
“It’s a tough wicket, and we got our rewards because we bowled really well.
“On the flipside, with the bat, it’s going to be a tough grind. We’ll have to build partnerships and dig in to score runs.
“We’ve spoken about the day and said it’s been a really good one. We’re 20 off their score having taken 10 wickets. If we get a decent lead and put pressure on them, we’ll be happy with that.”
6.48pm – CLOSE: Excellent day that for Yorkshire, despite losing four wickets in reply to 103 all out. They will begin day two on 84-4 from 22 overs, with Malan 14 and Brook 2.
6.35pm At the Ageas Bowl, England are 71-1 after eight overs chasing 213. Jonny Bairstow is 52 not out.
6.29pm Patterson, in as nightwatchman, has gone lbw to Coughlin. Three wickets in quick time. 68-4 now.
6.24pm Fraine gone! He’s been trapped lbw by Coughlin for 14. 68-3 in the 17th.
6.19pm Kohler-Cadmore gone! He’s been bowled by Raine for 41 off as many balls. Yorkshire 66-2 in the 16th.
6.11pm Yorkshire are 63-1 in the 14th over of their reply. Kohler-Cadmore has 38 and Fraine 14. Just to give you an indication of the contrast in innings, Durham scored nine boundaries in their entire innings. Yorkshire matched that haul in 11.2 overs.

5.30pm England will be chasing 213 to beat Ireland at the Ageas Bowl. Ireland finished on 212-9, with David Willey taking two wickets and Adil Rashid three. Here, at Durham, Yorkshire are 23-0 in reply to 103.
5.06pm Rushworth gone! He’s been caught and bowled by Coad – good sharp catch. Durham 103 all out. Coad 4-23. 22 overs remaining in the day. Coad had, three balls earlier, removed Potts caught at square-leg.

Tea report Yorkshire enjoyed a stunning six-wicket afternoon to seize the early initiative against Durham at Emirates Riverside.
The White Rose could have hardly started their Bob Willis Trophy campaign any better, reducing the hosts from 12-0 at lunch to 68-6. Durham went on to reach the tea break at 74-6 from 44 overs.
Ben Coad and Jordan Thompson have claimed two wickets apiece, added to strikes from Matthew Fisher and captain Steve Patterson.
Fisher struck first during an opening eight-over burst which cost him as many runs. He had former team-mate Alex Lees lbw with a full, in-swinging delivery, leaving the score at 13-1 after 12 overs.
Coad then had Sean Dickson caught behind – 25-2 in the 17th.
Thompson, in only his third first-class appearance, then really put the skids under the Durham innings with twin strikes.
He had Cameron Steel caught behind for nine and South African debutant David Bedingham caught at deep square-leg, the latter a soft dismissal but one which left the hosts at 41-4 in the 29th over.
Coad returned to the attack and removed Jack Burnham’s off-stump (61-5 in the 39th) before Patterson trapped Durham’s skipper Ned Eckersley lbw seven runs and almost three overs later.
Gareth Harte and Paul Coughlin will begin the evening on 21 and three respectively.
3.30pm Eckersley is trapped lbw by Patterson. Yorkshire continue their excellent start to this fixture. 68-6 on the cusp of tea.
3.29pm David Willey has taken two more wickets in the ODI, adding to his five-for on Thursday. Ireland are 69-4 in the 21st over. James Vince and Adil Rashid have also taken wickets.
3.19pm Durham are five down, and Coad has his second, as Burnham loses his off-stump. 61-5. Excellent stuff from Yorkshire. Talk about hitting the ground running.
2.37pm Bedingham gone! He’s clipped a leg-side delivery from Thompson to Fisher at deep backward square – a low catch. Durham 41-4.
2.17pm Durham lose another, this time to Thompson. Steel is caught behind for 9. They are 34-3 in the 25th over.
1.49pm Down the Ageas Bowl in Southampton – one heck of a drive from here (you could briefly stop off at Barnard Castle on the way if you fancy it) – Ireland have won the toss and elected to bat in the second ODI.

1.10pm We’re back up and running after lunch, with the sun shining again. Seven overs have been lost from the day’s allotted 90. Durham 12-0 in the ninth.
Lunch report Only 8.3 overs were possible during the opening morning of Yorkshire’s Bob Willis Trophy North Group opener against Durham, with rain arriving at Emirates Riverside.
Durham skipper Ned Eckersley won the toss and elected to bat before seeing his openers, Alex Lees and Sean Dickson, reach 12-0. However, they both survived scares.
Lees was the subject of a confident caught behind appeal from Matthew Fisher before Ben Coad thought he had Dickson via the same method.
Yorkshire are handing a first-class debut to off-spinner Jack Shutt, approximately 12 months after taking 5-11 in a Vitality Blast win on this ground.
The umpires called an early lunch for 12.30pm, an hour after the players left the field. The rain has since stopped, and the mopping up process is nearly complete.

Good morning and welcome to Emirates Riverside for the start of the 2020 season proper.
After a long wait and a couple of pre-season two-day games, we are finally set for the start of the Bob Willis Trophy, courtesy of a North Group opener against Durham, starting at 11am.
The weather is dry and bright up here in the North East, and both teams are warming up.
Yorkshire are set to hand a first-class debut to off-spinner Jack Shutt on the ground he took 5-11 in a Vitality Blast win last year.
The toss will take place at 10.30am. We are back to the normal toss rules having dispensed with the away team getting first option to bowl.
