Joe Root’s international career has long since moved beyond promise and into the territory of true greatness. Marked out early as a player of rare poise and precision, the Yorkshireman has become England’s most prolific Test run-scorer of all time and the star man for England.

From Sheffield Collegiate to the world stage, Root impressed for Yorkshire with 937 Championship runs in his first full season and 738 in his second, including a superb unbeaten 222 against Hampshire, before making his Test debut in Nagpur in 2012. There, his 73 showed the patience, judgement and resilience that would define his career.

A maiden Test hundred at Headingley against New Zealand followed in 2013, and Root never looked back. Across 163 Tests between 2012 and 2026, he has amassed 13,943 runs at an average of 51.07, with 41 centuries and a highest score of 262. His record against the world’s best attacks underlines that consistency, with 3,383 runs against India, 2,828 against Australia and 1,925 against New Zealand.

Root’s brilliance at home has been especially striking. In England, he has scored 7,329 Test runs at 55.52, including 24 hundreds and 33 fifties, turning venues like Headingley into theatres for some of his finest work. Yet he has also thrived around the world, averaging 65.50 in Sri Lanka and 50.30 in New Zealand, while adapting his game to every condition put in front of him.
