Dom Bess has hailed an all-round team performance so far at Scarborough as Yorkshire press for a crucial Rothesay County Championship victory over Warwickshire.

Bess struck twice with his off-spin and claimed a fabulous one-handed catch at mid-wicket to help Jack White remove Australian Test player Beau Webster.

White claimed three wickets, Hassan Ali and George Hill one apiece. The latter two also contributed 30 and 27 with the bat this morning to build on the earlier work of Will Luxton (167), Sam Whiteman (55), Jonny Bairstow (68) and Matthew Revis (40).

“We’re in a very good position,” said Bess.

“It’s a pitch where once you get in, you can score – probably not freely but you can. But it’s quite hard to get people out on once they get the pace of the pitch.

“I thought everyone bowled pretty well, to be honest. We’d have certainly taken that day. We’re way in front of the game.

“I know it was yesterday, but the way Luxy set it up with his century was excellent. There’s a lot of talent there. Jonny obviously contributed with his 60 and then the lower order as well. The way Hassan and George operated, I thought we did a pretty good job.”

Warwickshire closed on 225-7 in their first-innings reply to 469 all out, and they need to get to 320 to avoid the possibility of the follow-on.

“We’ve got a new ball in the morning, and hopefully we can get get a 210-220 lead. That would set up a really exciting day for us,” continued Bess.

“We’ve got to understand what it looks like in the morning with the follow-on. They might hang around or we go bang, bang, bang. You always want that possibility, and within that you can really dictate the game.”

And on his one-handed catch going low to his left, helping White get rid of Webster, Bess added with a smile: “Yeah, it was alright, wasn’t it.

“I know I’ve dropped a couple recently, so it was quite nice to cling onto one.”
