Yorkshire’s win against Glamorgan this week was their first in the County Championship at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff since 1998, rekindling memories of a special individual display by a certain Gavin Hamilton.
Ironically, the former all-rounder has this week been announced as the county’s new General Manager of Cricket, a newly created position responsible for delivering success for Yorkshire across all formats of the game.
Hamilton, who recently turned 50, will begin his new job on November 1.
This morning, Yorkshire completed a 185-run success to move closer to promotion back to Division One. There were a whole host of contributors to a fifth win of the season, and it was difficult to pick a standout performer.
But, back in late August 1998, Hamilton took all of the headlines with a quite stunning display.
He hit 79 from the lower middle order in the first innings as Yorkshire totalled 306 all out before claiming 5-69 from 15.5 overs of seam as the hosts were bowled out for 266 in reply.
In the second innings, Hamilton’s 70 was the standout performance in 296 all out, setting up a Glamorgan victory target of 337.
And they were bowled out for 222, with Hamilton – then aged 23 – claiming 5-43 from 15 overs.
Yorkshire won by 114 run – a margin not as comprehensive as this week’s win but still as impressive thanks to the exploits of one man.
Welcome back to the club, Gavin Hamilton!
