Matthew Revis reflected on a bittersweet day in the West Country as his maiden first-team fifty came in a Royal London Cup defeat against Somerset at Taunton.

Revis, 19, has enjoyed a productive couple of weeks, hitting 43 on List A debut against Surrey at Scarborough.

Unfortunately, it was the same story again here as another eye-catching performance went unrewarded in terms of points on the board.

Revis scored an unbeaten 58 to help recover Yorkshire from 89-5 in a rain shortened 20-over game, with the Vikings posting 158-5.

The tall all-rounder also claimed a wicket and two catches in the defence, which got away from Yorkshire in the second half.

Somerset stalwart James Hildreth finished 61 not out having offered a tough chance to Gary Ballance running back from mid-off when on 16: “Gaz is one of our best fielders, and things like that happen,” said Revis.

“I’m very happy with my innings, but it wasn’t ideal to not get over the line.

“I think we got the worst of the pitch.

“There was a little bit grass covering, and when their senior bowlers bowled with the seam up it was quite difficult to get away. But once we got past that first 15 or 20 balls, it was a lot more free-scoring.

“Myself and George Hill had a chat halfway through and said, ‘If we play strong shots, we’ll get our rewards for it. We don’t have to move around too much, just play strong shots’.

“Will Luxton’s playing outstandingly. He strokes the ball around the ground without even trying half the time. It’s brilliant to watch and great to be at the other end.

“Halfway through, a message came through saying, ‘160’s our target’.

“At half-time we were quite happy with that considering we were 70 for four. But two or three bad overs cost us, and fair play to Hildreth he played quite well.

“There were lessons to be learned, as in our previous games, but we feel we are making progress as a side.

“If that continues, we will qualify from the group.”
