Former Yorkshire spinner Karl Carver had an impressive weekend, as much with the bat as the ball, to advance Barnard Castle’s bid for silverware.
Carver played his part in back-to-back County Championship title triumphs in 2014 and 2015 before being released from Emerald Headingley at the end of the season before last.
He moved from York side Sheriff Hutton Bridge at the start of last summer and has taken 26 wickets and scored 285 runs in the 2021 North Yorkshire South Durham Premier League competition.
On Saturday, Carver hit 89 off 88 balls from number five, including two sixes, to guide them to a 50-over total of 259-7 away at bottom side Great Ayton.
He then claimed 2-31 from four overs as they bowled the hosts out for just 124, sealing a convincing win by 135 runs.
That leaves them 30 points behind leaders Hartlepool having won three of eight games – they claimed the maximum 25-point haul on Saturday.
The following day, they then knocked 2018 champions Richmondshire, their NYSDL rivals, out of the ECB National Club Championship at the second round stage.
They claimed a notable victory by three wickets chasing 220 in 40 overs. Carver contributed 21 having earlier taken three wickets.
Back to the NYSDL on Saturday afternoon, and leaders Hartlepool cruised to a nine-wicket win at home against Thornaby chasing 174.
New ball bowler Paul Braithwaite claimed three wickets before opener Harry Crawshaw produced Saturday’s only century – an unbeaten 108 – to ensure their were no dramas from 0-1.
He dominated a 179 stand with Braithwaite, whose excellent day was capped with 56 not out. That was their sixth win of the campaign.
There were wins from Richmondshire and Saltburn in third and fourth place.
Defending champions Richmondshire beat Billingham Synthonia by eight wickets on home turf chasing a 50-over target of 171.
Ajay Mandal took three wickets for them before wicketkeeping opener Tom Dowson crashed 99 off 78 balls with six sixes, only to fall 11 runs short of victory.
Yorkshire seamer Dom Leech took 2-31 from nine overs for Normanby Hall against Saltburn, who were bowled out for 204. However, Leech and co fell to 51 all out in response.
Marton are fifth and chasing a spot in the end of season Yorkshire Premier League play-offs.
The top ranked Yorkshire side in the NYSDL joins the champions of the Bradford League and the Yorkshire Premier Leagues North and South in a mini competition to crown the best club side within the White Rose county.
They beat Stokesley by 96 runs defending a target of 201.
Johnathon Pickard’s 40 not out from number six was the highest of a series of valuable contributions in 200-6 before the visitors were bowled out for 104 inside 36 overs.
Highly rated young batsman Craig Baptist fell for nought as one of the victims for captain Alex Wardell, who opened the bowling and returned 6-59.
The other result of the round saw Middlesbrough win at Marske by five wickets chasing 214.
Matthew Bell returned 3-58 in Marske’s 213-8 before James Lowe opened the batting and steered the chase away from danger at 40-3 with a 125 stand with Matthew Maloy.
Lowe top-scored with 84 off 114 balls and Maloy played a similar tempo knock of 70 off 110, sealing the win with 4.2 overs remaining.
Middlesbrough have won twice from eight games and are firmly in mid-table.
