Ian Dews has hailed the strength of character shown by Will Fraine and young gun Tom Loten to bounce back from adversity in their junior careers with Yorkshire.

Batsman Fraine, 22, has this winter returned to Yorkshire having signed a three-year contract from Nottinghamshire, where he made his Championship and limited overs debuts last summer.

All-rounder Loten starred for the second-team last summer, scoring 772 runs in all cricket.

The 19-year-old also scored 790 runs for the Academy and took 12 wickets.

Dews, Yorkshire second-team coach and Academy director, said: ”I remember Will playing in the under 17s and he had a really poor summer, but he was big enough to turn round and say ‘I can’t blame you for not giving me a contract, I didn’t score the runs, I wasn’t good enough’.

“So he went away and worked hard.

“Tom Loten didn’t score runs, got left out of the under 15s, a pinnacle year, went away and played well in the leagues.

“He played against the Academy in the leagues, scored runs, took wickets and somebody dropped out of an under 17s game on the Sunday night.

“He came in and the rest is history.

“He now opens the batting, opens the bowling and scored nearly 800 second-team runs last year.”
