Yorkshire County Cricket Club is proud to announce a brand-new addition to this year’s YCCC End of Season Awards: The Dickie Bird Breakthrough Player of the Year.
Few names in world cricket carried the weight and warmth of Dickie Bird. A proud son of Barnsley, Dickie’s journey began right here at Headingley before he went on to become the most recognised and best-loved umpire the game has ever seen. Across a career that saw him officiate in 66 Test Matches and three World Cup finals, Dickie became a global ambassador for cricket. He was celebrated not just for his eccentricities and unmistakable white cap, but for his fierce and unflinching integrity.
Yet, one thing always stood out above all else; Dickie’s deep, lifelong devotion to Yorkshire cricket.
This new award is our tribute to that legacy. Presented to one male and one female player each year who best embody the spirit of a breakthrough season, it will honour a rising talent who has seized their opportunity and given Yorkshire members a glimpse of the future. Just as Dickie’s own path started with a chance at this club before going on to shape the game worldwide, this award celebrates the next generation of Yorkshire cricketers taking their first significant strides toward something special.
Rachel Wyatt, niece of Dickie Bird said, “We are so proud that Yorkshire have chosen to honour Dickie in this way. Cricket, and this club in particular, meant everything to him, and he always had a soft spot for young players finding their feet in the game.
“We know he would be thrilled to see this award go to those taking their first big steps forward, just as he once did himself at Headingley. It’s a fitting and heartfelt tribute to a man who gave his whole life to the sport he loved.”
More than a trophy, it’s a nod to a Yorkshireman who gave everything to the game he loved and an invitation to each year’s winner to do the very same.
