Following, the unfortunate abandonment of the Metro Bank One Day Cup match between Yorkshire and Lancashire at Scarborough Cricket Ground on Thursday, 3 August 2023, the Club issues the below response:

Everyone at Yorkshire CCC were equally as frustrated and disappointed at the abandonment of the Roses fixture at North Marine Road last Thursday.

Despite the best efforts of the grounds team, given the deluge of rainfall (not just on Wednesday, 2 August, but throughout the ten days leading up to the fixture), unfortunately the game was to be abandoned without a ball being bowled.

When the umpires arrived in the morning, there was the opportunity of play on the condition that there was warm, dry weather and most importantly, no more rain. Once the last shower fell just before the next scheduled pitch inspection (1.15pm), any chance of play disappeared. The latest we could have started play for Yorkshire vs Lancashire was after 5pm and therefore the umpires wanted to give it as much chance as possible for play to go ahead, if the conditions mentioned above were favourable. Yorkshire CCC would like to reiterate that only the two umpires can give judgement on if or when play is to start.

The ticket policy for one day games is an exchange policy and is replicated across much of the County Circuit, including our Roses opponents. That said, we apologise that the Scarborough website had misleading information that was contrary to this, something that was rectified promptly once we had been made aware. The Scarborough ticket policy always has been a duplicate of Yorkshire and Headingley’s.

For this fixture only, given the exceptional circumstances and as a gesture of goodwill, Yorkshire CCC are extending its exchange policy to include any Yorkshire County Championship or One Day Cup fixture at Scarborough, York or Headingley for the remainder of the 2023 season or 2024 season.

With the forecast looking drier in the short term and with two exciting games against Surrey and Hampshire on the horizon, these fixtures next week represent a great opportunity for spectators who unfortunately missed out on action against Lancashire, to get behind our young stars as we look to kickstart our One Day Cup campaign.
