Second XI Championship – Three-day game
Report
On a glorious day Yorkshire won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first. James Wharton and Bilal Anjam took the score to 59 when, in the 23rd over Bilal was caught at mid wicket for 27 – this brought the further loss of the returning Tom Loten for 2 (caught behind) and George Hill, lbw without scoring.
Wharton was joined by Matthew Waite and they remained unbeaten at lunch with the score 90-3. There was a slight delay post lunch due to the sun reflecting from car windows and with the score at 115 Waite was caught at first slip for 40, made from 45 balls with 9 fours. Wharton reached his 50 from 128 balls with 5 fours but was, himself, caught at first slip off 15-year-old Jake Bethel for 59.
Ben Birkhead joined Jack Leaning and at tea they had taken the score to 221-5 – Jack unbeaten on 43 and Ben 32. Their partnership at this point was 53 and they extended this to 109 before Ben was caught behind for 59 from 111 balls with 9 fours. Jack reached his half century from 102 balls and strangely without a boundary. He hit 4 fours before he was caught at mid off for 75 from 136 balls.
Our total was then 282-7 and this was extended to 327-9 when we declared leaving Warwickshire four overs to bat and at the close, they were 6-1, Matthew Waite having Chapman-Lilley lbw.
They will start day 2 trailing by 321 runs.
