After winning the toss on a cloudy, cool morning Yorkshire skipper, Alex Lees asked MCC Young Cricketers to bat first.
Inroads were made immediately when Ben Coad took his first wicket in what turned out to be a memorable day for him personally.
He had Ben Curran lbw to the fourth ball of the day and in his second over had “former Yorkie” Eliot Callis also lbw. Jack Brooks also struck gaining an lbw decision to leave them 23-3 This quickly became 27-4 when Barret was taken at fourth slip to give Coad his third wicket.
A partnership of 74 took the score to 101 when, after a rest, Coad returned to take his fourth bowling Hudson-Prentice for 40 from 57 balls with 6 fours and at lunch they had progressed to 134-5.
Post lunch Bhula and Lezar took their partnership to 88 before the former became Coad’s fifth victim falling lbw for 38 from 87 balls with 7 fours. Prior to this Lezar had completed his half century from 99 balls with 9 fours. When Bhula departed the score stood at 187-6 – the final 4 wickets fell for only 4 further runs with MCC YC being dismissed for 191. There was a wicket each for Brooks and Shaw with Ben Coad finishing with 12-3-33-8, this being the best ever for Yorkshire against MCC Young Cricketers.
Our reply got off to a tremendous start with Harry Brook taking 23 from the second over. However Alex Lees fell in the next over, caught at mid off for 4 (25-1). Jack Leaning joined Harry and they reached tea unbeaten with the score at 80-1 – Jack 24 not out and Harry 45 not out.
However within 3 overs of the restart both were back in the Pavilion, Jack caught behind for 25 from 53 and Harry for 49 from 53 balls with 9 fours and a six. Tom Loten and Andrew Hodd advanced the score to 120 before Andrew was caught at 1st slip for 20 and Jordan Thompson departed next ball (lbw). Josh Shaw joined Tom and they battled hard to survive until the close, Josh 11no and Tom 40no from 101 balls with 6 fours.
