Bowl it like Bepey!
If first impressions are anything to go by, Yorkshire may be onto something when it comes to the signing of fast bowler Isaac Bepey.
The left-armer made his first-team debut in August’s Metro Bank One-Day Cup opener against Hampshire at Scarborough, returning figures of 3-64 from 10 overs.
Bepey, 25, had impressed the White Rose hierarchy in a series of second-team matches throughout the summer. He had bagged two four-wicket hauls and a trio of three-fors, prompting Anthony McGrath to give him his chance.
As it turned out, that Hampshire game was his only appearance, but Bepey had done enough to earn a two-year rookie contract, awarded in late September.
Somewhat of a late starter in pro cricket – in his mid-twenties – Bepey played Under 14s and 15s cricket for home county Kent before studying at University in both Cardiff and Leeds. He studied Medical Engineering at University – a year in industry and a Masters over five years.
And playing cricket for the Leeds Bradford MCCU side – as well as at Farsley in the Bradford League – is where he was spotted by Yorkshire.
Spending last winter playing club cricket in Melbourne also helped with his progression, with the county dream he had as a youngster now being rekindled.
Bepey views himself as a versatile quick.
Shortly after facing Hampshire, he said: “Obviously, as a left-armer, my primary skill is swinging the ball back in, which has lots of value in red-ball.
“But white-ball, it’s kind of like up top, take wickets, and then I back my skills at the death, my slower balls and my change-ups. So I’d say, as a player, I’m bookending the innings.”
