Weetwood Sports Ground – Second XI T20 – North Group

Umpires: T Lungley & Jason Pitcher
Scorers: JR Virr & R M Wilks
Toss Won By: Worcestershire 2nd XI, who elected to bat

The Club’s 2019 T20 campaign got off to a winning start as both games were won. For those who are unaware 2nd XI T20 days see two games between the same sides in the day.

Our line up included David Willey, who captained the side, Jack Leaning and Tim Bresnan. Also returning from injury were Jared Warner and Matthew Waite who each played in one game.

In game one Worcestershire won the toss and decided to bat first, a decision that appeared to have backfired when they were reduced to 12-3 in the sixth over with Bresnan taking all three. This became 31-4 and 58-5 before Alex Milton and Tom Banton added 39 in 28 balls. Milton made 30 and Banton finished 44no from 35 balls with two fours and two sixes.

Willey had 1-15 from four overs and Bresnan 3-8 from three. There was also a wicket for Jordan Thompson and Josh Poysden who added three catches, all taken at 3rd man (he added one more in the second game).

Yorkshire lost three wickets in reaching the target with 7.3 overs to spare. David Willey 19 from 14 balls. Jack Leaning made 27no from 25 balls but it was Tim Bresnan with 41no from 24 balls who provided the major blows with five fours and a six.

Game two saw Yorkshire bat first – Willey was caught behind for seven and Ben Birkhead and George Hill added 65 in 54 balls before both departed in the same over: Birkhead for 44 from 33 balls (5 fours) and Hill 33 from 32 with three fours; seven overs remained and Leaning and Bresnan added 86 in that time – Leaning 44no from 24 (4×4; 2×6) and Bresnan 42no from 21 (2×4 and 4×6). Yorkshire closed on 180-3.

Again Yorkshire reduced Worcestershire to 32-3 but opener, Tom Fell, made 55 from 41 balls with five fours and a six but only two others reached double figures as they finished 119-9. Poysden 3-16 from 4, Bresnan2-14 from two and Warner 2-28 from four.

Yorkshire take on Lancashire at Aigburth in a Championship game starting on Wednesday before returning to Weetwood to take on Warwickshire on Monday 15th July in our second T20.
