Several current Yorkshire players will be playing in the Tony Nicholson Trophy at Ripon Golf Club today, in memory of the former Yorkshire opening bowler who died in November 1985.
The golf day will also remember another popular Yorkshire cricketer and fast bowler, John Waring, who passed away in October 2023.
The Ripon golf event has been arranged by two ex-Yorkshire cricketers, Peter Whiteley and Kevin Sharp, respectively chairman and president of the Yorkshire Players’ Association.
They’ll be joined by present stars Jonny Tattersall, Ben Coad, Harry Duke, Dom Bess and George Hill.
Nicholson, one of the county’ best loved characters and an outstanding new ball bowler, played 282 first class games, taking 876 wickets(19.74) and in 120 List A matches, he claimed 173 wickets(17.05) during a career from 1962 to 1975.
Regarded as Fred Trueman’s best partner, Nicholson was a major member of the great Yorkshire team which won the County Championship in 1960, 1962, 1963, 1966, 1967 and 1968.
John Waring was not a regular first team player, but played 28 first class games for Yorkshire(1963-1966) taking 53 wickets at 21.16.John played only one List A match without taking a wicket.
John’s finest hour came in the Roses Match at Headingley in 1966 when he returned match figures of 10 for 63..7-40 in the Lancashire first innings.
The Tony Nicholson Trophy starts between 9.30 and 10.00 am at Ripon Golf Club, and later, there’ll be a presentation followed by a meal.
