Yorkshire County Cricket Club congratulates Joe Root following his appointment as England Men’s Test captain for a second time.
One of Yorkshire’s greatest ever cricketers, Root returns to lead his country having already established himself as England’s leading Test run-scorer and one of the finest players of his generation.
From his early days forged at Sheffield Collegiate CC and the Yorkshire Cricket pathway, to making his first-team debut at Headingley before embarking on a remarkable international career, Root’s journey remains one of the county’s proudest success stories.
The 35-year-old has represented Yorkshire with distinction throughout his career and continues to inspire the next generation of cricketers across the county whenever he returns to pull on the White Rose.

Root captained England between 2017 and 2022 and returns to the role as one of the most experienced and accomplished players in world cricket. Since making his Test debut in 2012, he has become England’s all-time leading Test run-scorer, continuing to represent Yorkshire whenever his international commitments allow.
The Club looks forward to welcoming Joe back to Headingley next month when England welcome Pakistan in the first Rothesay Test Match.
