Scorecard

Yorkshire enhanced their excellent recent record in Roses Specsavers County Championship cricket with a 118-run victory inside three days at Emirates Old Trafford.

The White Rose county dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s on their third win from eight Division One matches this season as Lancashire, chasing 323, advanced from 194-6 to 204 all out inside 45 minutes of play.

Joe Root claimed career best figures of 4-5 from 7.4 overs, including three wickets this morning.

It means Yorkshire, who started the fixture second-bottom in the table, have jumped up a couple of places and deepened their rivals relegation fears as a result.

Lancashire have now only won one from nine matches, losing five.

Yorkshire claimed 19 points to Lancashire’s two, with the hosts deducted a point for a slow over-rate

Yorkshire are fifth in the table on 87 having played eight, Lancashire are sixth on 73 having played nine and Hampshire are seventh and in the relegation places on 72 having played eight. They are not playing this week.

Day three started in perfect fashion for Yorkshire when Root had Graham Onions caught behind for a duck with the first ball, leaving the score at 194-7 in the 49th over – Root’s second wicket in three balls.

He claimed his third wicket in the 53rd when Matthew Parkinson edged to slip with only two more runs added.

Steve Patterson trapped Tom Bailey lbw for 45 before Root trapped Jimmy Anderson lbw shortly afterwards to wrap up the win in the 61st.

Lancashire’s injured captain Liam Livingstone (fractured left thumb) came out with the intention of batting one-handed at number eleven, but he did not face a ball.

Yorkshire have not lost a Roses Championship match since 2011, winning four and drawing three.

It was also the perfect way to respond to Friday’s Vitality Blast defeat against the same opponents at this venue.

Yorkshire will no doubt point to first-innings disappointment when they only made 192, including that memorable Jordan Clark hat-trick when he got Root, Kane Williamson and Jonny Bairstow.

But things went pretty well from then on.

Both sides bowled well, and Yorkshire are able to point to a couple of key contributions with the bat second time around.

Bairstow’s 82 off 67 balls was the top score in the match, while Harry Brook impressed with 55 at the top of the order.

Attentions now switch to the second half of the Vitality Blast group stage, with Yorkshire’s next Championship match starting on August 19 against bottom side Worcestershire at Scarborough.

The two Roses rivals meet again in the Championship at Emerald Headingley (September 10-13).
