Yorkshire’s men’s Academy tasted final disappointment in the Under 18s County Cup today, beaten by Glamorgan at Headingley as the visitors defended a 247-target to win by 46 runs.
This was a game replayed following rain at Kibworth last Sunday, the White Rose in an excellent position a week ago when the weather intervened having bowled the Welshmen out for 130.
The final started afresh today, with Glamorgan bowled out for 246 by a Yorkshire side who were reigning champions having beaten Middlesex last year.
Unfortunately, however, they weren’t able to defend their title, bowled out for 200 in reply.
Glamorgan started well having been inserted, reaching 161-2 inside 23 overs, with Joe Kenchington en-route to the contest’s standout score of 104 off 106 balls.
But the left-handed number three was one of five wickets for Louie Wilson’s leg-spin as Yorkshire fought back superbly to limit the damage.
Wilson, on the county’s Emerging Players Programme, plays his league cricket at Studley Royal, the same club where Ben Coad and Fin Bean learnt their trade.
Wilson finished with 5-39 from 10 overs.
In reply, left-handed Academy opener Tom Fraine led the way with a measured 70 off 105 balls but failed to gain enough support as Glamorgan took wickets all too regularly.
Left-arm seamer Mohammed Aazim claimed three wickets, as did off-spinner Zac Williams.
When Fraine was eighth man out with 142 on the board in the 37th over, caught at long-on off Williams, it looked to be game over.
But a brisk 38 from captain Charlie H Taylor gave Yorkshire a glimmer of hope.
It wasn’t to be, however, and Taylor was last man out with the score on 200 in the 46th over – bowled by Aazim – to hand Glamorgan the 50-over title.
