Day 1

Winning the toss Durham asked Yorkshire to bat first. Tom Fraine and Yash Vagadia opened the innings but it was skipper, Vagadia who departed first being bowled by Glover for 1, 12-1. Noah Kelly joined Fraine, both “fresh” from their under 18s cup win yesterday over Middlesex and they took the total to 47 before Fraine was caught in the gully for 32 from 44 balls with 6 fours.

Ten runs had been added when Kelly was caught behind for 8. Harry Duke and Will Bennison had added 36 from 70 deliveries when on the stroke of lunch the latter was well caught at slip for 21 from 41 balls – lunch Yorkshire 93-4.

After lunch 4 further wickets fell in the space of 7 overs as we fell to 106-8: Duke made 29, Akhtar 0, Thompson 4 and Taylor 1. Ben Cliff was joined by Alex Wade and just prior to tea they had taken the score to 179 when Wade was bowled for 27 from 68 – he and Cliff had added 73 in 137 balls. Tea 179-9.

The restart was delayed for 5 minutes due to rain and there was a further 9 minutes lost but Ben Cliff was able to post his maiden half century from 80 balls with 8 fours and a six and with Josh Hoyle they added 25 for the last wicket as Hoyle was caught at slip for 16 and Cliff finished unbeaten on 52 – 204 all out.

There was a slight delay for the light before Bushnell and McAlindon began Durhams reply. Only 2 overs were bowled before bad light struck again (6-0) and when play restarted at 5.20 12 overs had been lost.

Only a further 8 were possible before bad light brought a final halt to play – Durham were 32-1, the wicket being taken by Charlie Taylor having Bushnell caught behind for 13.

Day 2

Day 2 started late due to bad light and 10 overs were lost, leaving 94 in the day. Hughes was bowled by Tom Bradley for 12 and the next ball he had Gaffney well caught at 2nd slip by Vagadia. The hat trick ball was survived but shortly Bushnell was caught low in the gully by Akhtar to give Ben Cliff his first wicket; 46-4.

Cliff then had French caught behind  and Durham were 59-5. Symmington was joined by Mustard and at lunch they had taken their total to 94 without further loss.

After lunch their partnership extended to 60 from 71 balls before Mustard was caught at backward point by Akhtar off Dom Leech (119-6). Killeen was caught at deep square leg by Josh Hoyle to give Bradley his 3rd wicket and Symmington was held at mid on by Matt Milnes as Bradley claimed his 4th – Durham 129-8.

Bowman and Glover added 50 in 42 deliveries for the 9th wicket, 179-9 and 10 runs later Alex Wade held a return catch and Durham were dismissed for 181 giving Yorkshire a first innings lead of 23.

Fraine and Vagadia were both caught behind for 0 and 2 respectively and at tea we had reached 30 without further loss, Duke 10 not out and Noah Kelly unbeaten on 12. For various reasons the final session still had 48 overs to bowl and shortly after the restart Duke was caught at slip for 21. Will Bennison joined Kelly and the 2 youngsters added 107 in 133 balls before Kelly was taken at point for 74 from 105 balls with 13 fours – his 50 had come from 79 balls with 9 fours. Jawad Akhtar was caught behind 2 balls later and we were 151-5, leading by 174.

Bennison completed his half century from 65 balls with 9 fours and he was unbeaten at the close of play on 89 from 117 balls with 15 fours. Matt Milnes made 19 and Dom Leech was also unbeaten on 20 as Yorkshire closed on 235 – leading by 248.

Day 3

With the game intriguingly poised, shortly before the scheduled start of play the rain arrived and stopped only fleetingly. An early lunch was taken but inevitably at 1.33 pm the game was abandoned as a draw.

Next action for the 2nd X1 starts on Monday 9th September against Lancashire at Southport.
