DAY 1
On a cool and overcast morning Hampshire won the toss and elected to have a bowl. Yash Vagadia and Noah Kelly opened the innings and had made 21 when Vagadia was caught behind for 18 from 25 balls with 4 fours.
Skipper, Will Luxton joined Kelly and his first scoring shot was a maximum. They added 75 in 98 balls before Kelly fell in the same manner as Vagadia having made 337 from 54 balls with 7 fours (96-2). Luxton who was dropped at cover on 32 was unbeaten at lunch on 47 from 76 balls with 7 fours and a six as Yorkshire reached 118-2; Duke also unbeaten on 9.
Shortly after lunch Luxton reached his half century from 82 balls with 8 fours and a six but Duke had added 9 when he was bowled – 143-3. Luxton had made 77 when he became the 4th wicket to fall being caught at mid off from one that appeared to “pop” – 175-4.
Will Bennison and Jawad Akhtar added 48 from 81 balls before the former was caught at backward point for 29 made from 48 balls. Owen Smith was bowled for 2 and at tea we were 235-6. After tea we slumped to 259-8 as Chohan (6) and Cliff (60 were caught at 1st slip and by the keeper respectively.
Akhtar completed his half century from 93 balls with 6 fours but was caught at slip for 58 and Brad Sylvester was bowled for 2 leaving Charlie Taylor 15 no as we were dismissed for 287.
From the remaining 12 overs Hampshire reached 47 without loss.
DAY 2
Resuming their innings 240 behind the hosts added 36 before Charlie Taylor struck with his first delivery to have Orr caught behind for 43 from 60 balls. This was followed 2 overs later by Ben Cliff dismissing Middleton in the same fashion; 85-2.
Halstead-Cleak was caught behind off a no ball with the score 119 and he added a further 23 taking the total to 164 before he was caught at slip by Luxton to give Jafer Chohan his first victim. Chohan struck again shortly before lunch and Hampshire were 171-4.
The post lunch session saw Chohan continue his fine form with 2 further wickets reducing our hosts to 187-6; Yorkshire still ahead by 100. At this juncture Chohan had figures of 4-7. Neal and Kelly took the total to 230 when a fine catch in the gully by Will Bennison gave Brad Sylvester his first wicket. Chohan struck again to reduce them to 233-9, however history repeated itself with Neal being caught behind off a no ball with the total 249 but the last pair saw to a slender lead of 9 as Chohan finished with 7-58 from 15.4 overs.
Tea was taken leaving a final session of 42 overs. Vagadia got off to a flyer with 38 from 30 balls before his partner, Noah Kelly, was caught behind for 15 – 53-1. Will Luxton made 2 before being dismissed in the same way as the first innings – caught at mid off, 59-2. Harry Duke also dismissed as per first innings bowled for 8, 68-3.
Akhtar and Bennison took the total to 105 before the latter was caught behind for 17. Owen Smith joined Akhtar and they remained unbeaten at the close taking the total to 151-5 a lead of 142.
DAY 3
Yorkshire lost their first Championship game of the season by 6 wickets with over a day to spare.
Leading by 142 overnight we lost Owen Smith caught behind for 17 (164-6). Shortly after Jawad Akhtar completed his second half century of the game from 95 balls with 8 fours and a six. He and Chohan added 35 in 70 balls before Chohan became the first of 2 lbw decisions in 3 overs – he went for 11 and Taylor without scoring.
Akhtar ended 84 not out from 148 balls with 13 fours and a six as we were dismissed for 223, leaving Hampshire 215 to win. In 3 overs to lunch they were 30 without loss.
Matthew Firbank struck with the first ball after the break to have Orr caught behind by Harry Duke, however Middleton and Weatherley added 88 in 123 balls before Chohan bowled the latter for 31 (118-2). During that partnership Middleton had reached a 42-ball half century with 11 fours. He went on to make 75 from 76 balls before being caught by Duke to give Taylor a wicket. Taylor struck again having Halstead-Cleak caught behind for 7 (148-4).
This was our last success as Organ, 46 from 40 and Gordon, 40 from 52 added 69 in 81 balls to guide them home.
