DAY 1

This was day 1 of the 2025 2nd X1 Championship season. Yorkshire won the toss and elected to bowl. Came and Wagstaff added 35 for the 1st wicket before the former was taken at slip by Finlay Bean off the bowling of Jay Singh. This was the start of an inspired spell from Singh as he took 3-9 in 13 balls – Wagstaff and Reece both being caught behind by Harry Duke.

Joe Pocklington struck in his 1st over having Bin-Naeem lbw and Brad Sylvester had Basra also lbw for 2 and at lunch Derbyshire were 127-5.

Dal had made 47 from 57 deliveries but he was lbw to Ben Coad immediately after lunch – the first of his 3 wickets for 18 runs in 13 overs. Derbyshire were reduced to 157-8 but courtesy of 51 no from Tickner they reached 227 all out.

Jonny Tattersall and Harry Duke were both dismissed for 11; lbw and caught behind respectively (37-2). Bean made 43 with 4 fours and 2 sixes but he was taken in the gully and Yash Vagadia was lbw and we were 85-4.

Noah Kelly and Jawad Akhtar were both unbeaten at the close on 34 apiece; Yorkshire 148-4.

DAY  2

Yorkshire commenced the second day trailing by 79 runs with 6 wickets remaining. Akhtar and Kelly took their overnight partnership of 63 to 95 before Kelly was caught at slip by Came off Haydon for 49 made from 126 deliveries with 5 fours.

Shortly before Kellys wicket Akhtar had reached his half century from 71 deliveries with 7 fours and a six and he and Owen Smith added 51 for the 6th wicket before Akhtar was held at deep square leg for 68 from 108 balls with a further 2 fours.

At lunch Yorkshire had reached 249-6, Smith unbeaten on 34. Post lunch we lost our last 4 wickets in less than 6 overs for the addition of only 37 runs, ending 286 all out – a lead of 59.

Ben Coad struck in the 3rd over having Came lbw and Basra was caught at mid on by Akhtar to give Brad Sylvester a wicket – 27-2. However the tea interval arrived without a further breakthrough; 73-2.

Wagstaff was magnificently caught low at short leg by Owen Smith off Joe Pocklington immediately after tea soon followed by Bin-Naeem. Lavelle was caught behind by Jonny Tattersall for 20 and our visitors were 125-5, a lead of 66. However Hawkins joined Dal and they remained unbeaten at the close as Derbyshire extended their lead to 146. Dal reached his half century from 73 balls and his hundred from 113.

DAY 3

Day 3 started with Derbyshire leading by 146 with 5 wickets remaining. Call ups to 1st X1 squads lead to changes in both teams with Dal the overnight not out batter departing.

However, it took until lunch for Yorkshire to take the 5 remaining wickets, Joe Pocklington bagging 4 of them to finish with 6-99 from 30 overs. Hawkins was the last to be dismissed having made 62 from 169 balls. Derbyshire were 273 all out leaving Yorkshire 215 to win with 5 sessions remaining.

Finn Bean was caught behind in the second over but Jonny Tattersall and Harry Duke took the total to 47 before Duke was lbw for 21. Noah Kelly joined Tattersall and their partnership extended to 61 before the latter was caught at slip for 41 from 72 balls – 108-3. Kelly was bowled shortly after but at tea Yorkshire were 132-4 needing a further 83 runs.

The tea interval brought a change in strategy from our visitors with spin at one end and short pitched medium pace at the other and it proved most effective as the last 6 wickets fell for 45 runs; Yorkshire 177 all out to lose by 37 runs.

YCCC   4 points                      Derbyshire  19 points

Next Championship action is again at Weetwood against Northamptonshire commencing 24.6.25.
