Yorkshire were set a challenging target of 321 midway through day three of their Specsavers County Championship match against Somerset at Taunton and closed on 49-1 from 24 overs.
Somerset head into the final day as the most likely winners given the bowler-friendly conditions, although Yorkshire success is far from out of the question despite having been bowled out for 96 in their first innings.
They will begin day four needing 272 more to win.
This was a mixed day for the White Rose, with Somerset starting on 6-0 in their second innings with a lead of 126.
They dominated the morning by reducing the score to 113-6, with Ben Coad striking three times, before Somerset hit back after lunch to recover from 129-7 to post 200.
Coad finished with figures of 4-61 and Jack Brooks 3-44.
Coad now has 17 wickets in two Championship matches this season and Brooks 13.
Swing has been evident throughout a fixture which lost its first day to rain on Friday.
But a result has been made likely by 20 wickets falling on Saturday’s second day.
Australia opener Matthew Renshaw and Somerset captain Tom Abell are the only two batsmen to date to have looked comfortable at the crease for any length of time.
Renshaw hit 112 off 99 balls in the first innings before Abell hit 82 off 137 during the second, marshalling the tail as they added 71 for the last three wickets to frustrate Gary Ballance and company.
Unfortunately, Abell offered chances on 24 and 69, with Andrew Hodd missing an extremely tough catch off Coad’s bowling before Jack Leaning missed the second in the gully off Tim Bresnan.
Coad and Brooks shared the first four wickets as Somerset slipped to 24-4 in the eleventh over, with the latter uprooting the off-stumps of Renshaw and James Hildreth for eight and 10.
Brooks also bowled Craig Overton with a beauty of an out-swinger just after lunch to leave Somerset seven down with a lead of 249.
But Abell, who had earlier shared 66 for the fifth wicket with wicketkeeper Steve Davies (33), began to frustrate the visitors.
He added 42 for the eighth wicket with Dom Bess, who edged Matthew Waite to second slip for 14. Waite had earlier trapped Lewis Gregory lbw offering no shot and finished with two wickets.
Abell hit eight fours and flicked six behind square, and he added 29 for the ninth wicket with Josh Davey before the latter chipped Bresnan to mid-off.
Coad wrapped up the innings when he bowled Abell, who was looking for quick runs. It was the second wicket to fall on 200.
That left Yorkshire with 46 overs to bat in the day, although that was later reduced by bad light either of tea. Twenty two overs were lost from the day’s allotted 104.
Adam Lyth and Harry Brook took a boundary apiece off Gregory’s first over which went for nine, but it was otherwise slow and watchful progress.
Thankfully, Yorkshire were able to get through to close with little damage.
They lost only Brook for 15, who was caught at second slip by Marcus Trescothick off the seam of Davey as the score fell to 26-1 in the 12th over.
Lyth and India overseas batsman Che Pujara will resume on 25 and six respectively.
