James Wharton, who contributed 56 at York today, reflected with frustration on Yorkshire’s Metro Bank One-Day Cup defeat against Gloucestershire.

The Vikings lost by 36 runs as they failed to chase 252, slipping from 137-2.

They have now won two, lost two from their opening four Group B games, with the competition reaching its halfway stage.

Wharton was one of two fifty-makers as the Vikings were bowled out for 215 in a match which proved challenging for the batters. Captain Shan Masood top-scored with 76, but he couldn’t prevent Gloucestershire from matching Yorkshire’s played four, won two, lost two record.

“I thought we bowled well and restricted them to a total we were happy with. We took wickets at really good times and didn’t let their middle order get in, which was really pleasing,” said Wharton, who made his second career fifty in 10 List A appearances.

“Batting, it was all going really well. But we just lost a couple of wickets in quick succession and it tumbled and tumbled and tumbled. We never really got it back.

“When you come to the outgrounds, the wickets don’t really allow for free-flowing run-scoring. The wickets can be slower and a bit tennis-bally. The bounce is a bit indifferent.

“But, like I said, we kept them to a total we were happy with and just didn’t get the job done.”

Yorkshire have a weekend off before travelling to Scarborough on Tuesday to face Essex, their first of two games in three days at North Marine Road as Leicestershire visit on Thursday.

Wharton added: “It’s about still playing with confidence now.

“Losing that is really disappointing, but we’ve still got to play with confidence. We have a great batting line-up, and we’ve just got to show it now.”
