Matthew Revis believes Yorkshire’s consistency with the ball was most impressive as they made a healthy start against Division Two leaders Sussex at Scarborough.

Revis claimed 3-37 from 15 overs of seam, the standout figures in a five-man attack who all contributed as the visitors, inserted, were limited to 187-9 from 72 overs.

Tom Alsop and Daniel Hughes, with 84 not out and 53 respectively, were forced to dig in for Sussex on a grey and blustery East Coast day.

Sussex advanced at 2.6 runs per over on a day which saw 24 overs lost to rain and bad light.

“You can tell by the fact they haven’t gone over three-an-over, and Scarborough is usually a fast-scoring ground. That just shows how consistent we were,” said impressive Revis.

“Both individually and as a team, we held our lengths really well today, which is often key at Scarborough.

“It was tough conditions to bowl in with the wind, but we’ve had a good day.

“With Coady and Tommo, when he’s needed, taking the new ball, we know what we’re going to get from those two. They’re going to make it challenging.

“It’s up to myself and Hilly to come and back them up spell after spell. All in all, we did that.”

Revis continued: “The ball tends to stay a bit harder at Scarborough than it does at Headingley just because it’s a less abrasive surface here.

“The ball was in great condition throughout the whole day, which helped create movement and doubt for the batters.”

Revis claimed all of his wickets via slip catches in an impressive display of seam bowling.

The all-rounder, 22, has come into this Championship match on the back of an impressive Metro Bank One-Day Cup campaign, in which he added six wickets to 232 runs at an average of 46.4.

“I think I’m in a decent place,” he added.

“The 50-over comp was probably a bit of a kick-start to my season.

“The first half didn’t go as well as I would have wanted, but I highlighted the 50-over comp as a new challenge and a fresh start.

“Hopefully I can carry on that form for the rest of the season.”

Bygones, 1986: Kevin Sharp's recollections as Sussex beaten by one wicket

Cards on the table. Kevin Sharp doesn’t remember too much about the game we have chosen for this latest bygones piece ahead of Yorkshire’s home fixture with Sussex at Headingley.
