Spin through the middle with the ball and a blistering top order batting performance saw Yorkshire end their Abu Dhabi T20 campaign, and their 2019 season, on a high by beating Hobart Hurricanes this morning.

The Vikings hammered the much-changed Big Bash finalists in a Group A dead rubber as they chased down 141 to win by nine wickets with 7.1 overs to spare.

Karl Carver, captain Adam Lyth and Josh Poysden shared four wickets in their tidy 12 overs combined as the Hurricanes slipped from 88-2 in the 12th over to 112-6 in the 16th, undermining their chances of an imposing total. They finished on 140-7.

Opener Tom Kohler-Cadmore then raced to 50 off 32 balls and finished with 72 not out off 42 balls in a dominant pursuit.

Harry Brook also cracked an unbeaten 42 off 22 as the pair shared 99 in eight overs for the second wicket.

Highlights of Yorkshire Vikings v Hobart Hurricanes

Left-arm spinner Carver was playing his first T20 game since being hit for six sixes in an over by Worcestershire’s Ross Whiteley in July of last year, and he struck twice.

He had Caleb Jewell stumped and Sean Willis caught at deep square-leg for 38 and 35 respectively. They had shared 52 for the third wicket.

Carver finished with figures of 2-29, while Lyth returned 1-21 and Poysden 1-22 in an all-round disciplined bowling display, further highlighted by Ben Coad’s superb 1-8 from three overs.

Yorkshire made three changes from the team which lost to Lahore on Thursday evening, with regular skipper Steve Patterson, Tim Bresnan and Jordan Thompson missing out.

Carver, Coad and Matthew Waite came in.

The Vikings were asked to field first in the morning heat (11am start), and Hobart, who lost to Lahore yesterday, made a steady start by reaching 77-2 after 10 overs.

Josh Shaw, who impressed Pakistan legend and TV commentator Waqar Younis with a pacy display against Lahore, claimed the early wicket of Ben Duckett caught behind off a top-edged pull and finished with two-for.

Left-handed Jewell and Willis gave their side hope of posting a total in the region of 180, but their team-mates were unable to back up their work.

Poysden bowled former Lancashire all-rounder Jordan Clark and Lyth had Keegan Oates stumped.

Lyth and opening partner Kohler-Cadmore then took 18 off Charlie Wakim’s part-time off-spin in the third over to get the chase moving at 33-0.

Lyth slog swept and pulled the first two balls for six.

The pair shared 45 inside five overs for the first wicket before Lyth miscued Clark to cover as he tried to go over the top.

But the momentum was maintained as Brook hit four fours in his first six balls, all off fast bowler Nathan Ellis, helping Yorkshire to 69-1 after six.

The Hurricanes, despite signing three overseas players in Duckett, Clark and West Indian Jerome Taylor and fielding Johan Botha, lacked experience in this competition, and it showed.

However, in the likes of Jewell and Ellis, they have players who could feature in the Big Bash as Christmas approaches.

Brook was keen to make room for himself to hit through the covers or down the ground and succeeded. His glut of boundaries continued, with seven coming in his first nine balls.

In the eighth over, he hit three in a row off Clark as the White Rose reached 88-1.

Kohler-Cadmore then took on the lead role and finished the game in double quick time, reaching 50 off 32.

Pakistan’s Lahore Qalandars went on to win the trophy, beating the Titans in the final.

Lahore posted 148-6 and defended it to beat the competition’s favourites by 15 runs. The South Africans finished with 133-6.

What they said

Yorkshire’s man-of-the-match Tom Kohler-Cadmore: “It’s always nice to finish the season with a win and some runs personally. It leaves you going into pre-season with a good taste in your mouth and gives me confidence heading into the next few weeks with the (England) Lions coming out here.

“The spinners and Ben Coad were superb for us. For a seamer to bowl three overs 1-8 out here is so special. The pitch skidded on nicely and you could hit through the line, so it was hard to defend. For him to bowl how he did is special.

“The spinners were great. Josh Poysden did it again having bowled well against Lahore, and he’s showed us what he can do with the white ball. I’m very excited about what he can deliver for us over the coming years. Karl Carver and Adam Lyth also bowled really tight.

“We’re putting ourselves under pressure, which is good for the coming season. It’s a long way away now, but it is going to give these guys confidence.”

Hobart coach Ben Rohrer: “It was a disappointing result. We were at least 30 runs short. We had a couple of starts from a few of the guys, our younger players. But they needed to go on to get us to a big score.

“The bowling, we weren’t too bad I didn’t think. But Yorkshire played with quite a bit of freedom. When guys are in moods like that, it’s pretty hard to stop.

“Nathan Ellis was great in his first game yesterday. We are very inexperienced. It’s the first hit on turf for most of these guys for the season, so there was going to be a fair bit of rust around.

“The pleasing thing was that some of our kids who played yesterday were pretty nervous, but they came out today and played pretty well, Caleb Jewell, Sean Willis and Jack White at the end. They are playing against some high quality opposition here with a lot of first-class experience. Looking forward for us, it’s been a great little development tour.”
