Stokes’ brilliant hundred helps England win another Headingley thriller
By Paul Edwards
England, 67 and 362 for 9 (Stokes 135*, Root 77, Denly 50, Hazlewood 4-85), beat Australia, 179 and 246, by one wicket
At 4.20 this broiling Leeds afternoon Pat Cummins bowled to Ben Stokes. The delivery was a little short and gave Stokes the chance to swing his arms, an opportunity he is generally quick to seize. So he did again and the ball was flayed to the cover boundary.
How mundane it sounds! How matter of fact! Who would think it completed the one-wicket England victory which kept the Ashes alive after a Test which is being called the finest in the game’s history?
