Joe Root has backed Yorkshire team-mate David Willey to star for England again in the future after missing out on selection for the ICC Men’s World Cup.
Willey was left out of England’s final 15-man squad in place of Sussex fast bowler Jofra Archer.
The 29-year-old has played 46 one-day and 28 T20 internationals since debuting in 2015 and was expected to be selected, with his left-arm swingers providing a different dimension to England’s pace attack over the next month-and-a-half.
“No one really deserved to miss out due to how well everyone had performed coming into this summer and selection,” said Root, one of three Yorkshire players named in the squad alongside Jonny Bairstow and Adil Rashid.
“I think Will is a fine cricketer.
“He’s done some wonderful things in an England shirt, and I’m sure he will do again in the future.
