Joe Root has backed the appointment of fellow Yorkshireman Chris Silverwood as England’s new head coach.

Test captain Root and Silverwood will work closely together in trying to help England regain top spot in the ICC rankings, with the former Essex coach saying Test success is his number one priority.

The pair will work together as captain and coach for the first time next month during a two-Test series in New Zealand, although their relationship is already strong with Silverwood having stepped up from his role as bowling coach to replace Trevor Bayliss.
