Joe Root hailed England’s first away Test series whitewash in 55 years after completing a 3-0 success over Sri Lanka in Colombo this morning.

England were inspired by man-of-the-match Jonny Bairstow and their spin trio, Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali and Jack Leach, with 100 wickets falling to spin in the series.

England won by 42 runs as they defended a target of 327 to win inside four days.

There was a late fightback from the hosts, which saw them recover from 226-9 before being bowled out for 284, with Moeen and Leach finishing with four wickets apiece in the second innings.
