Matthew Revis is aiming to convert a number of starts into standout contributions in a bid to repay the faith shown in him by Yorkshire’s management having batted him higher up the order for the majority of the 2026 Rothesay County Championship summer.

All-rounder Revis, who turns 25 next month, contributed 519 runs and 17 wickets in 14 red-ball appearances throughout the summer. He was one of only four ever-presents in Championship cricket alongside Dom Bess, George Hill and Adam Lyth.

Revis started the season batting at number six. But, from five games in, he batted at four, three and – for the most part – number five.

“It’s provided a bit of a different test,” he said, speaking about his elevation to five, where he batted in the last eight matches of the season.

“It’s only a position higher, from six, but it does pose different challenges with potentially going in a bit earlier and the ball moving around more than it would be if I was batting at six.”

Revis contributed two red-ball half-centuries, one a score of 50 in the very first innings of the season against Glamorgan at Cardiff in April, a match which was drawn. The other, 61, came in the innings victory over Essex at Headingley last month. In the Vitality Blast, he crashed a brilliant 69 not out to secure a time against Derbyshire at Chesterfield in June.

“I’ve had a bit of a frustrating year with the bat, getting four or five forties,” he said. “But I’ll keep working as hard as I can, and hopefully those scores will come.

“Everyone who takes the field, and everyone in the squad, gets backed a great deal by the coaching staff and Jonny as well.

“There are no excuses from a performance point of view.

“I try and take a bit more responsibility in that position.

“Last year, I managed to get starts, kick on and be consistent with that.

“For me, it’s about kicking on again and trying to repay them.”

Revis’s game is progressing at pace. He was Yorkshire’s Player-of-the-Year in 2025 following a trio of Division One hundreds and earned England Lions recognition last winter.

He was also brought into The Hundred by the Northern Superchargers as a replacement player.

The summer just gone, he was picked up by SunRisers Leeds prior to the start of the tournament and played seven times as they reached the Eliminator stage – effectively the semi-finals.

Earlier today, it was announced that the Steeton-born star has been awarded a Development contract by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

A host of coaches have played significant roles in his progression, including the likes of Rich Pyrah – a man key to him developing his bowling pre-Covid – Ottis Gibson, Anthony McGrath, Andrew Flintoff, Mick Lewis and John Sadler. There are others too.

And Revis has spoken about enjoying his work alongside a former New Zealand international during this summer’s Hundred.

“It was a great month, making the Eliminator,” he reflected.

“Even the players you are playing against and with, it felt like a very good standard of cricket. I took a lot of learnings from that, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

“Dan Vettori was our head coach, and he threw quite a lot of off-spin in the nets. I felt like I learned a lot from just facing him. He made me look silly a few times!

“He also had a lot of good points for me.

“Rubbing shoulders with the likes of him, Mitch Marsh and Brooky, you learn so much from just watching them and see how they go about what they do.”
