SCORECARD

Ami Campbell hit a brutal and brilliant career best 165 not out with seven sixes as Yorkshire sent records tumbling with a mammoth 381-6 total in today’s Metro Bank One-Day Cup win over Derbyshire Falcons at the County Ground.

Yorkshire’s left-hander hit particularly well down the ground and over the leg-side, including taking 28 off one over, as the county claimed victory by a whopping 315 runs.

The White Rose total is a List A record for the county, while it is also the highest total recorded by any professional side in English domestic cricket, dating back to the start of the regional era in 2020.

In reply, Derbyshire were bowled out for 66 inside 23 overs, slipping from 28-1. Seven of the 10 wickets fell to spin, handing captain Lauren Winfield-Hill her second win in three matches at the start of this competition – and their second on the bounce after victory at Sussex last weekend.

This was also the county’s biggest ever margin of victory runs wise in List A cricket.

Amazingly, Campbell went from 100 to 150 in only 13 balls and finished having hit 17 fours and seven sixes in her 105-ball innings, setting things up for a bonus-point triumph.

She shared a superb sixth-wicket partnership of 194 inside the last 23 overs of the innings with Olivia Thomas as they advanced from 183-5 in the 28th over.

All-rounder Thomas had a fabulous day too on her 21st birthday. She contributed a career best 63 from 67 balls and later 4-16 from five overs of leg-spin – also her best haul with the ball in 19 senior career appearances.

Captain Winfield-Hill, who lost the toss at the start of a settled East Midlands day weather wise, set the tone expertly, pulling the seam of Pagan Hardwick for six over mid-wicket as the score moved to 19-0 in the second over.

She dominated an opening stand of 59 with Erin Thomas, who was dropped twice en-route to 22 before miscueing Hardwick to mid-off in the eighth over.

Winfield-Hill played nicely but will have been mightily frustrated when she drilled the looping leg-spin of Rose to mid-off when one short of her fifty, 83-2 after 12.

Yorkshire didn’t have things there own way for a period, as Rose impressed.

She removed Rebecca Duckworth for 17 – 105-3 in the 16th over when Campbell arrived at the crease – and Sterre Kalis for 34, both caught in the ring when looking to attack.

And when the same bowler bowled Maddie Ward, who played on attempting to sweep, Yorkshire were five down for 183 and in danger of not making the most of their good start.

But enter Campbell and Olivia Thomas.

Left-handed Campbell took on the lead and aggressor’s role as she posted the second century of her List A career – her first since 2016 when she was playing for Northumberland women.

Thomas, meanwhile, was more reserved albeit strong down the ground as she grew in confidence.

One of her seven boundaries was also reverse ramped off seam.

Derbyshire struggled in the field. Their catching let them down, including Campbell dropped at mid-on when on 96 and looking to go over the top to reach three figures.

Having reached her century off 87 balls, Campbell took Hardwick apart in the 46th over, which took the White Rose from 293-5 to 321-5. Campbell hit all 28, including three sixes and two fours.

Yorkshire added 129 runs for the loss of one wicket in the last 10 overs of the innings, including five of Campbell’s sixes.

Thomas fell lbw late to the penultimate ball of the innings in search of quick runs, with Langston hitting her only ball for four.

And Langston was quickly into the action with the ball as well, forcing wicketkeeper-opener Megan Pittman to chop on four balls into the chase, 4-1.

Realistically, the Falcons chase was never on having been batted out of the game.

And former Lancashire all-rounder Thomas led the way in ensuring that Yorkshire’s five-point win was secured in double quick time.

The hosts had made their way to 28-1 in the 10th over, only to fall to 34-7 in the 15th, losing six wickets for six runs.

Thomas trapped captain Darlow lbw, as she did opener Jessica Couser. She also had Millie Gray caught at first slip by her sparring partner Campbell and Rhiannon Knowling-Davies caught at mid-wicket.

In and around that Claudie Cooper, Yorkshire’s contracted off-spinner, had Natasha Allen caught behind by Winfield-Hill before bowling Harriett Parkin. Cooper finished with 2-4 from three overs.

Derbyshire did manage to get their total up beyond 50 thanks to Ella Porter’s unbeaten 23 from the middle order.

But, after Ward’s spin trapped Caitlin McDonald lbw, seamer Grace Hall got Hardwick the same way before she wrapped up the win when Rose edged, fittingly, to Campbell at slip.

The two sides reconvene at Harrogate on Monday afternoon in the first round of the new Vitality County T20 Cup knockout competition.
