Yorkshire Cricket is regarded as one of the greatest clubs in the world, and as one of the proudest in existence. Established over 150 years ago, the history, tradition and passion of its Members are the main reasons for this. The pride of the Club’s supporters has always been evident.
To celebrate the Club’s fantastic supporters, we bring you a feature looking at memories of some of the White Rose Members. This week we hear from David.
When did you first become a member of Yorkshire County Cricket Club?
“I first became a member in 1962 but let my membership lapse as I left Yorkshire for the ‘dark side’ of the Pennines. I re-joined in 2002.”
What are your first memories of Yorkshire County Cricket Club?
“My first memories are of seeing the team of 1960 at Bradford Park Avenue playing Essex. I can’t remember the result.”
What is your fondest memory of Yorkshire cricket?
“My fondest memories have to be being at Trent Bridge in 2014 and Lords in 2015 and seeing Yorkshire win the County Championships. Actually, being there was indescribable, a feeling of pride which was made all the better by the team being mainly former Yorkshire Academy players who won the title.”
What is your favourite ground and why?
“Headingley is my favourite ground. Just looking at the cricket field and imagining all the fine cricketers that have played there, all the close county and test matches on this famous turf.”
Who is your favourite current player and why?
“There are so many to choose from. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow are obvious choices, but for staying power and pure Yorkshire-ness, Tim Bresnan.”
Yorkshire supporters are known for being very passionate about their county and cricket team, would you put yourself in that bracket?
“I certainly am passionate about Yorkshire cricket. After my wife and daughter (both members ), Yorkshire CCC is the love of my life.
“I never forget to tell people that I am a member of the most famous and finest cricket club in the world.”
What are you most looking forward to during the 2019 season?
“Seeing Yorkshire’s young players (Ben Coad, Matthew Fisher, Matthew Waite, Jordan Thompson, etc.) all breaking through into the first team. Yorkshire lads doing Yorkshire proud.”
Which young player in the current squad do you think will breakthrough next year and why?
“Matthew Waite. He was playing really well prior to his injury, he seems to have the complete game, just needs the experience.”
How do you see the 2019 season going for Yorkshire CCC?
“Hopefully 2019 will finish with a trophy of some sort, but mainly entertaining cricket played like Tykes in front of large group of passionate supporters.”
What is it about the experience at Emerald Headingley and Scarborough that makes it a good place to visit for you and your family?
“One thing really helping the experience is the friendliness of the local supporters and the Yorkies volunteers smiling and greeting the fans. I must declare an interest here being a Yorkie. Also, Scarborough is unique in this country as an out-ground.
