Matthew Revis is hoping Yorkshire’s excellent second morning at Taunton today can be the start of better things to come for Yorkshire.
The White Rose players and coaches know all too well it hasn’t been the start to 2026 that the county desired, losing one and drawing two.
Coming into day two against Somerset today, they were pinned on the back foot, with the hosts at 201-3 in their first-innings reply to 162. But Jack White and Revis himself struck twice apiece as Somerset lost their last seven wickets for 73 runs.
A disrupted day weather wise saw Yorkshire close on 13-0 second time around, and they will begin day three with a manageable deficit of 99 runs.
“We let things slip more than we would have liked in the final session on day one, so we spoke about putting the ball in the right areas for longer and being more relentless,” said Revis. “I think we did that.
“We’ve been good in periods and lapsed at other times this season.
“You know, in Division One, when you’re playing against good sides and good players – when you lack that – they really put you to the sword.
“Thankfully, in the morning session, we could hold that for a long period of time and got our rewards.
“Somerset are a very good team and are up at the right end of the table, so I think the boys will take confidence from going through them like that.”
Revis took the last two Somerset wickets with his seam immediately before lunch, allowing Yorkshire’s batters to get to work on reducing the arrears.
If the weather holds for the next two days, there is no reason why Yorkshire can’t turn this game completely on its head.
Revis added: “We haven’t got the runs we would have liked in this game so far, but Josh Thomas has already shown that this can be a good pitch to bat on.
“We need to turn up tomorrow with the similar attitude that we had this morning and really try and make a good dent and put a lead on.
“You’d like to think the pitch has probably flattened out a bit by day three.
“There might be a little bit more spin, who knows. But we’ll be trying to put plenty of runs on the board.”
