Yorkshire were beaten by nine runs as Lancashire claimed a Roses Vitality Blast victory at Emerald Headingley.
Dane Vilas top-scored with 43 off 24 balls in Lancashire’s 170-6 in front of a sell out crowd, with Vikings debutant Jack Shutt impressing with two wickets for 31 from four overs of off-spin.
Nicholas Pooran also top-scored for the Vikings with 43 off 31, but he fell in the 18th over as one of three wickets for Saqib Mahmood in a total of 161-9.
The hosts failed to get 19 off the last over from Mahmood, with Jordan Thompson left with a task just too tall.
Ahead of Sunday’s trip to Northampton, Yorkshire have lost two from four games with one win and a No Result.
Yorkshire wouldn’t have been too disappointed with Lancashire’s total, especially given the visitors were 138-3 after 15 overs with captain Vilas and Glenn Maxwell going well.
But the Lightning only scored 32 runs and lost three wickets in the last five overs to significantly boost the Vikings.
Vilas hit three sixes, and he and Maxwell shared 61 inside six overs for the fourth wicket. But both fell late on.
Shutt’s first three overs were exceptional, conceding only 14.
Settled by the wicket of Steven Croft with his third ball in the eighth over – caught at long-on off a full toss – as the visitors fell to 62-2, he later had opener Liam Livingstone caught at long-off following a miscue.
Livingstone was one of three Lightning batsmen to make 25 – opening partner Alex Davies and Australian ex-Yorkshire overseas Maxwell were the others.
Unfortunately, against Vilas and Maxwell, 22-year-old Shutt’s final over went for 17 to dent his figures, but he should still come away from his debut outing hugely encouraged.
Thompson was the pick of the Vikings bowlers with 1-25 from his four overs, including the breakthrough wicket of Davies caught behind (45-1 after five).
Thompson expertly used his variations to stymie Lancashire’s progress with 1-25 from four overs, while Willey also affected the direct hit run out of Vilas from cover and there were wickets for pace pair Duanne Olivier and Mat Pillans.
Despite Tom Kohler-Cadmore hitting two of the first four balls of the chase for four and six against Croft’s off-spinners, Yorkshire found themselves 16-2 after nine balls.
Adam Lyth was bowled sweeping at Croft before Kohler-Cadmore was bowled by England Lions fast bowler Mahmood.
Thankfully, however, Willey and Brook recovered things with a 62-run stand inside eight overs as Yorkshire edged ahead.
When Willey swept Matthew Parkinson’s leg-spin to deep mid-wicket, falling for 32, Yorkshire moved to 81-3 after 10 overs needing 90 more.
Brook then fell for 30 when he skied a catch to James Faulkner at point off Richard Gleeson – 97-4 in the 13th.
Pooran was dropped on eight by Croft off Gleeson back peddling from mid-off later in the over before lofting Parkinson for six over long-on as the target became 57 off the last five overs.
He hit two more before falling to Mahmood, who struck twice in the over to trap Dom Bess lbw as Yorkshire fell to 140-7.
Faulkner then also struck before a further run out off Olivier, with Thompson failing to get his side over the line.
THE TURNING POINT: Saqib Mahmood bowling dangerous Nicholas Pooran for 43 (140-6 in the 18th) was the beginning of the end for Yorkshire.
SHOT OF THE MATCH: Dane Vilas, moving to 41 in the 15th over of Lancashire’s innings, pulled Mat Pillans for six over wide long-leg, and it bounced in between the Western Terrace and the new Emerald Stand towards the Rugby ground.
UNSUNG HERO: Jack Shutt may have finished on the losing side, but his first three overs on debut in first-team cricket were excellent for the Vikings.
WHAT’S NEXT: Lancashire face defending Worcestershire at Emirates Old Trafford tomorrow (6.30pm) in a repeat of last season’s semi-final, while Yorkshire travel to Wantage Road to tackle Northamptonshire on Sunday (2.30pm) – Nicholas Pooran’s last game.

“There’s a hell of long way to go in this competition and you get on a bit of a run and with a bit of momentum behind you, anything can happen. We’re a long way from seeing how it’s going to pan out.
“At the halfway point, although we left a few out there, we were pretty happy. But we were disappointed with the second half.
“I’m happy with how it went tonight personally, especially the first three overs.
“If you’d have told me this morning that I was going to bowl four overs straight through at Glenn Maxwell, then I wouldn’t have believed you. He’s an unbelievable player who I’ve watched on TV a lot growing up. So that was really surreal.”

“To beat Yorkshire is always special.
“James Faulkner made it easy for me with a great penultimate over, and I was defending 19 or 20 off the last.
“I thrive off the responsibility, and I wanted to bowl the 18th and 20th overs, and Dane Vilas is a captain who backs me.”
