George Hill shone during a weather-interrupted day two at Scarborough with an expertly-crafted 62 as Yorkshire got themselves up to a first-innings 263 all out.
All-rounder Hill, so often a talisman with the ball, helped Yorkshire advance from 144-5 overnight – and 146-6 during the early stages of play – to claim a batting bonus point as they were bowled out on the cusp of tea.
Play didn’t start until 2.10pm due to overnight rain and a subsequent wet outfield, and Yorkshire progressed nicely.
Leicestershire then reached 12-0 from 3.4 overs of their first innings before rain interrupted play and, ultimately, brought an end to proceedings. There was no play beyond 4.35pm.
One-time England Test fast bowler Josh Hull finished with three wickets for the Foxes.
James Wharton fell for 70, not adding to his overnight score. He was caught behind off Ian Holland’s seam with the day’s second legitimate ball. Captain Holland had started with a no ball.
The catch was Jonny Tattersall’s fifth. He is now the only wicketkeeper to have ever claimed five dismissals behind the stumps in an innings both for and against Yorkshire.
Hill then shared half-century stands for the seventh and ninth wickets with Dom Bess and Ben Cliff, the latter 53 in 29 balls.
Bess, on 21, fell to Hull, who then removed Ben Coad – 210-8.
Hull’s first wicket had been Jonny Bairstow last night.
Hill then became more expansive, including hoisting Tom Scriven over long-off for six en-route to his fifty in 64 balls.
Cliff also attacked during his 22, hitting three successive boundaries off Rehan Ahmed’s spin before being bowled with the fourth.
In the next over, the 77th, Hill skewed Alex Green to deep third to wrap the innings up.
Tea was taken immediately, with only 22 more balls bowled afterwards as Leicestershire replied.
In all, only 24.5 overs were bowled today.
We have so far lost 111 overs in this match, just under a third of the total overs Yorkshire have lost (360) in this season’s Championship so far.
