Jess Jonassen scored her fifth half-century of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup but couldn’t prevent Yorkshire from slipping to defeat against Hampshire at Utilita Bowl.
Australian Jonassen provided the glue for the Yorkshire batting – 166 all out – to score a classy 64, before taking 2-20 in defence.
But her exploits were in vain as Amanda-Jade Wellington’s five-wicket haul and Georgia Adams’ 61 gave the already qualified hosts a seven-wicket victory over the White Rose.
Lauren Winfield-Hill won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch which had been used for Hampshire’s Rothesay County Championship match against Warwickshire last week.
After Daisy Gibb had bowled a maiden, Alice Clarke was caught behind with the first ball of the second over.
Winfield-Hill dominated a 33-run partnership with Jonassen, and after she also edged behind, the Australian took control.
Jonassen is the third-highest run-scorer in the competition having scored 539 runs at an average of a smidgen under 45.
She continued that seasonal form with a stylish innings full of well-timed drives, pulls and whacks down the ground.
Jonassen reached her fifty in 57 balls, after partnerships of 44 and 58 with Sterre Kalis and Erin Thomas – which showed the shoots of a promising total.
But having had a platform of 116-3 at the half-way point, they were bowled out in 43 overs, with a collapse of seven wickets for 31 runs.
The One-Day Cup’s leading wicket-taker Wellington was the main danger.
The Australian found Kalis chopping onto her own stumps before she bowled Thomas with a beautiful textbook leg-spin delivery – which pitched outside leg stump and hit the top of off.
Jonassen was brilliantly caught at square-leg to end her excellent stay while Ami Campbell played Naomi Dattani onto her stumps.
Claudie Cooper was unlucky that Wellington turned into a super hero to taking a stunning caught and bowled, with Jess Woolston and Holly Garton were caught off their leading edges to bring Wellington her third career five-for.
Sarah Glenn attempted to boost the run-rate at the end, including a six into the legside, but she was caught at short fine leg to end the White Roses’ innings.
The chase looked straight forward for the hosts, and with Adams coming into the match with two centuries in her last three innings, the task looked tough.
Adams took charge, but Jonassen’s introduction secured the wickets of Ella McCaughan and Abi Norgrove – both caught by Hannah Rainey at mid-on.
The overseas took 2-5 in her first six overs to continue her all-round day, although Adams and Francesca Sweet’s 59-run stand took the game out of reach.
Things didn’t improve when Winfield-Hill was struck in the throat by a delivery from Garton. The captain was treated for 10 minutes on the pitch before being taken to hospital.
Jonassen captained in her absence, while Clarke took the gloves.
Adams and Sweet both reached their fifties, and while Garton pushed one through Adams to bowl her, Sweet and Rhianna Southby completed the bonus point win with 11.5 overs to spare.
