Dawid Malan believes Yorkshire are currently on the wrong end of a 140-run swing in the game after two days against Nottinghamshire at Headingley.
When undertaking his media duties at the end of day two, Malan, who impressed with a fluent 64 this morning, feels the White Rose allowed Nottinghamshire to get too many runs in the first innings with their 228 and then were short in their 159 reply.
As a result, he said: “They’re fully in the driving seat at the moment.”
The former England left-hander, Yorkshire’s new T20 captain, went on: “Both days haven’t been the days we wanted.
“If you look at the way the ball behaved yesterday, I think we were probably a bit disappointed that they got 220-odd, whatever they got. Probably around that 160 mark would have been good.
“And then same today. I think we were quite short with the bat.
“They bowled well and took their chances, but we probably left about 50 or 60 or 70 out there with the bat.
“If you look at both innings, 70 too many in the first innings and 70 short with the bat, that’s 140 runs, and that’s a big swing in the game.
“That doesn’t mean we haven’t got an opportunity to still win this game.
“I definitely think if you look at the way the wicket’s played, it’s definitely calmed down – not a lot, but a bit, especially when you get through that new ball and you can get them into the second or third spell.
“Hopefully it’s something we can build on with the way the wicket’s playing now.
“Good on the lads. They tried their backsides off today, having bowled quite a lot of overs on the first day.
“Once again, we let a few opportunities go down, and that hurts when you guys are tired and they’re trying.
“But hopefully they can have a good spell tomorrow, someone can put their hand up, have a good spell and give us something to chase.
“Hopefully then we can be better at landing things with the bat than we were today.”
On his own innings, which came off just 45 balls, Malan added: “I watched the way they played in the first innings, and Joe Clarke was quite successful when he was more positive.
“I think my third ball hit the shoulder of the bat off a length, and then my sixth ball pitched around off-stump and nipped down leg and rolled. I thought, ‘I’m going to chance my arm and see if I can get a few runs here’. Thankfully I did.
“A bit disappointed I didn’t carry on and have someone to hang around with. But that’s cricket.”
