Yorkshire spinner James Logan has reflected on an extremely positive spin bowling camp in India through February.

Fledgling spin duo Logan and Jack Shutt flew to Mumbai at the start of February, initially under the guidance of former England and Wales Cricket Board lead spin bowling coach Peter Such.

The trip to Global Cricket School in Mumbai, not organised by the White Rose county, was especially useful for left-armer Logan given the 22-year-old’s 2019 domestic summer was ravaged by injury.

He first of all broke his thumb during the club’s pre-season tour to Potchefstroom and then did not play any cricket beyond late July due to a stress fracture in his back. In all, he played 10 matches last summer for club side Farsley and Yorkshire’s first and second teams.

In his solitary appearance for Yorkshire’s firsts, he claimed four second-innings wickets in the Specsavers County Championship defeat against Warwickshire at York in June.

“I had a frustrating year last year, only being fit for a month of the season in total,” he said. “So it was good for me to get outside and do some bowling in India.

“Looking back now, I feel quite lucky that I got the chance to do that with everything that’s going on in the world at the moment.

“I got to play some games out there, and it’s been months and months since I last did that.

“It was good just to be able to get out of the routine of doing my rehabilitation in the East Stand nets at Headingley.”

Logan went on: “The first 10 days there we worked with Peter Such, who had kind of organised the trip. After that, we got passed over to an Indian coach called Hitshu Bachani.

“He has a six-month job coaching an Australian grade side, so his English was pretty much perfect.

“I’ve never actually worked with a coach like him.

“He was a spinner himself, and his thinking was very much outside the box.

“He spoke to me a lot about what I can do with my wrist and fingers to get more spin and a better shape on the ball. It was all really interesting and very useful.”
