Report

There are times when you just have to say ‘congratulations and well done’ and unfortunately from a Yorkshire perspective this was one of those times as our 2019 Trophy campaign was ended at a sunny North Marine Road.

Winning the toss we were asked to bat first and lost Harry Brook in the fourth over bowled for 8. Bilal Anjam joined Will Fraine and they added 85 in 109 balls before Bilal was caught at extra cover for 37.

Just before Bilal’s departure Fraine reached his half century at a run a ball including seven fours and a six and he went on to reach his hundred from 93 balls with a further five fours and a six. Unfortunately, in reaching his hundred, two further partners were lost – George Hill, run out for 0 and Ben Birkhead bowled for 11.

Fraine was finally dismissed for 121 from 108 deliveries when he was caught at point – the score was 206-5 with 13 overs remaining, however only 88 was added in those overs as we were all out in the last over for 294, only Ed Barnes making an impact with 41 from 36 balls.

Matthew Fisher had Thomas Haggett caught behind for 1 with the score at 22 and 40 more were added before Josh Poysden had Sam Burgess lbw for 34, however this was to be our last success until shortly before the end of the game. Opener Jordan Cox was 22no when he was joined by Alex Blake and together they added 217 in just 157 balls.

Cox’s 50 came from 60 balls and he was finally dismissed caught behind off Matt Pillans for 97 from 108 balls.

The fireworks, however, came at the other end with as fine a display of clean hitting as you will see. Blake took 13 balls to reach double figures but thereafter he hit 12 fours and eight sixes reaching his 50 from 32 balls and his hundred from a further 32. He was finally caught at long off but had made 139 from 83 balls and Kent needed only six more to win – this they did to record a six-wicket win with almost eight overs to spare.
