Yorkshire’s David Willey after Essex closed on 252-9
“It’s frustrating, but despite that I think it was a brilliant effort by all the bowlers today. It’s a good pitch, but we managed to get the ball moving sideways and went at less than two and a half an over for the day. Take the scoreboard out of it, look at what we’ve done, we had a great day. We did well to get it as close as we did.
“We managed to bowl nicely. The ball reverse swung a bit, which helped massively.
“Dom got hit for a six into the stand, and it came back rough on one side and started reversing.
“There’s always a way you can win the game, but it’s going to be a big challenge to try and post a score. There’s still a bit there with the new ball, so we can’t just go out and try and blaze 150 in the morning.
“It’s going to be very difficult to set up a game, unfortunately. But I guess you never know. If the scoreboard starts flowing, we may be able to have 50 overs at them.”

Division One
Surrey (6th) v Somerset (2nd) at Guildford
James Hildreth’s fluent 64 from 80 balls kept Somerset’s noses in front. They are 143 for 8 in their second innings, an overall lead of 256, having earlier in the day taken the last five Surrey first innings wickets for 41 runs to dismiss them for 231. Morne Morkel and Matt Dunn have both taken three wickets.
Warwickshire (7th) v Nottinghamshire (8th) at Edgbaston
Nottinghamshire hit deep trouble when they went to tea on 93 for 8 in reply to Warwickshire’s 391 for 9 declared. Warwickshire skipper Jeetan Patel has taken four wickets so far after Adam Hose had earlier made 111, his maiden first-class century.
DIVISION TWO
Middlesex (7th) v Sussex (6th) at Lord’s – day four
A stubborn century stand between James Harris and John Simpson kept alive Middlesex’s hopes of salvaging an unlikely draw. They have so far added 103 to steer their side to 212-5 at tea, still 131 short of making Sussex bat again.
Northamptonshire (9th) v Glamorgan (5th) – Glamorgan won by an innings & 143 runs
Michael Hogan and Marchant de Lange swept Glamorgan to a thumping victory, sharing seven second-innings wickets as they won by an innings and 143 runs at Wantage Road after Northants were bowled out for 195.
Durham (10th) v Derbyshire (2nd) at Chester-le-Street
Matt Critchley’s unbeaten 79 ensured Derbyshire’s first innings deficit was kept to 25. Durham are 61 for 2 in their second innings and lead by 86.
Lancashire (1st) v Leicestershire (8th) at Liverpool
Mark Cosgrove made 70 as Leicestershire recovered from 82 for 5 to 220 for 7 in reply to Lancashire’s 449.

4.49pm New ball due in two overs. Not sure I’d take it though. I’d wait for 15-20 runs to see if they can break through whilst saving the new ball quicks for once the follow-on comes. If that doesn’t work, then take the new ball with the score around 220-7.

4.05pm Essex lost three wickets for one run shortly before tea on day three to undo some earlier good work against Yorkshire at Emerald Headingley – and they are still 50 short of the follow-on target of 241 at 191-6 from 70 overs.
Yorkshire, defending a first-innings 390 in this Specsavers County Championship fixture and still with high hopes of victory, struck four times in all during a productive afternoon, including two to South African quick Duanne Olivier.
Ravi Bopara, particularly fluent for 44, was the last of the trio of late wickets when he dragged Olivier onto his stumps having aimed a pull. That left Essex at 191-6 in the 65th over.
Less than four overs earlier, they had been serenely progressing at 190-3.
However, Dan Lawrence chipped Olivier to short mid-wicket, where Will Fraine took a smart low catch, before Ryan ten Doeschate edged Dom Bess to Adam Lyth at slip.
The first wicket of the afternoon came when David Willey had Tom Westley caught behind for 77 with one that nipped away ever so slightly, leaving Essex at 132-3 in the 48th over.
Bess and Olivier ended the session with five successive maidens. Simon Harmer and debutant Will Buttleman are yet to get off the mark.
3.42pm OUT! Bopara b Olivier for 44 – drag on. Essex are 191-6 and have lost three wickets for one run.
3.38pm Dom Bess claims his second wicket, and it’s the Essex captain Ryan ten Doeschate caught at slip for nought. Essex 191-5, needing 50 more to avoid the follow-on.

3.06pm Essex are 160-3. David Willey has been particularly impressive. Bowled good, probing lines with just enough movement to trouble the batsmen.
2.27pm Willey gets Westley caught behind for 77. It’s 132-3.
1.55pm The light may become a bit of an issue as we move through the day. The umpires checked it just before we started the afternoon. Olivier and Coad in tandem. 115-2.
Lunch Yorkshire struck only once with the ball as Essex enjoyed a dominant third morning with the bat at Emerald Headingley.
England discard Tom Westley played confidently in reaching his first Specsavers County Championship fifty of the season as Essex, replying to a first-innings 390, advanced from 18-1 to 115-2 from 39 overs.
Westley – unbeaten on 68 – and opener Nick Browne (35) completed a second-wicket partnership of 94 before the latter fell lbw to Dom Bess half an hour before lunch, leaving Essex at 97-2.
Earlier, Westley was struck on the head by a Duanne Olivier bouncer – the 10th time this season the South African quick has forced a concussion check with a short ball.
He then lofted off-spinner Bess for a straight six on the way to an 88-ball fifty.
Dan Lawrence will join Westley at the crease after lunch on two.

Good morning from Emerald Headingley.
It is a dry start to day three between Yorkshire and Essex.
It was actually bright sunshine 5 to 10 minutes ago, but now more overcast. Still, the main thing is that the covers are off and the players are about to commence their warm ups.
The all important target is 241 today. That is where Essex, replying to Yorkshire’s first-innings 390, must reach to avoid having to follow-on. They will start the day on 18-1.
Should the visitors make Yorkshire bat again. they will be extremely confident of securing a draw out of this game, both sides’ fifth of the season in the Championship.
Dom Bess enjoyed a fine morning by completing an unbeaten 91 yesterday, while Ben Coad removed Sir Alastair Cook for two at the start of Essex’s reply.
