Match Centre

4.54pm – Play has been abandoned for the day here.

4.30pm – It continues to rain heavily here. It would be a surprise if we see any more cricket, in truth.

3.58pm – And heavy rain has arrived.

Tea D1

3.53pm – Bad light. 276-3 after 59 overs. Root 65 and Brook 44. That will be tea.

3.35pm – SIX! Brook hoists Reece down the ground towards the Howard Stand, moving to 33. At 252-3 in the 55th, we have our first batting point.

3.32pm – Root reaches his fifty off 86 balls with 4x4s. A fine knock. We’re 244-3 after 54 overs (floodlights on now).

Root 50 Der

3.13pm – Back-to-back boundaries for Brook off Chappell takes him to 15 out of 221-3 in the 50th over. First was driven down the ground, the second cut hard behind point.

3.04pm – WICKET! Oh no. Lyth’s been caught behind on 97 off Chappell. Excellent knock. 205-3 in the 48th. Brook in now.

2.56pm – Lyth on 96 now as we move to 204-2 after 46 overs. Root 40.

2.47pm – Century stand between Lyth and Root, who have 89 and 39 respectively. We’re 195-2 in the 44th over. Super stuff.

2.33pm – Derbyshire have let a fourth chance go begging. Lyth gets a tickle on one down leg off Tickner on 80 and wicketkeeper Guest goes one-handed and can’t hold on. New Zealand quick Tickner puts his shirt over his head in a show of frustration.

Yorkshire have since moved to 176-2 after 41 overs.

Showing there are many ways to skin a cat, Root has reached 29 with one boundary, calmly accumulating. The man he has replaced at the crease, Masood, hit 10 fours in his 40 before lunch.

2.09pm – Yorkshire 152-2 in the 36th over. Lyth 63 and Root 22. Derbyshire will be rueing those missed chances this morning. They could have exposed the likes of Root, Brook and Hill when the ball was still new. Now, they face an uphill task to drag things back.

1.57pm – Yorkshire 144-2 in the 33rd overs. Lyth 62 and Root 16.

1.41pm – We’re up and running after lunch. Yorkshire 128-2 after 28 overs. Lyth 52, Root 11. Lyth facing Brown.

1pm – Lunch. Positive session for Yorkshire, who reach 128-2 from 28 overs. Lyth 52 and Root 11. All action, with three dropped catches, a controversial dismissal and some lovely stroke play.

Lunch 1 Der

12.57pm – Lyth reaches another fifty, off 81 balls with 9x4s. Excellent. Yorkshire 124-2 in the 27th over.

Lyth 50 Der

12.53pm – Three fours in as many balls for Lyth, off Reece, take him to 48. Yorkshire 119-2 in the 26th over.

12.33pm – WICKET! Masood caught at second slip for 40 off Reece. 92-2 in the 22nd over. Root in now.

12.24pm – Masood has hit six boundaries in eight balls faced across the 19th and 20th overs from Dal and Chappell, and has 36 out of 85-1.

12.21pm – Four fours in the over for Masood off Dal, and he has caught Lyth up on 28. 76-1 after 19 overs.

Yorkshire’s progression hasn’t been without fortune, but they will be chuffed to be in this position having been inserted.

12pm – WICKET! Bean has been trapped lbw by Dal, 15. 46-1 in the 15th.

Controversy about this one as the ball before Brown stepped on rope at long-on with ball in hand trying to stop a boundary – replays confirm it.

Brown initially stopped as if to say, ‘I’ve stepped on the rope’ but signalled that he didn’t know to the umpires and a three stands. Had it been given four, Bean wouldn’t have faced the first ball of the following over – the ball he got out to.

11.52am – Third chance goes begging, toughest of the lot. Came at first slip gets a hand diving to his right as Lyth gets a leading edge, on 22, off Dal. Big gap between keeper and first slip proves costly. It goes for four. 39-0 after 13 overs.

11.46am – Another life for Bean as Madsen drops him at first slip on 11 – 22-0 in the 12th.  Bowler Tickner lets out a big scream of frustration, and Madsen goes straight off the field to get a finger injury tended to. Early frustration for Derbyshire.

11.28am – Life for Bean on 8 as he’s dropped at second slip by Donald off Dal. Low catch going to his right. Yorkshire 22-0 after seven now.

11.24am – The sun is out now at Headingley. Yorkshire 19-0 in the seventh.

11.04am – Yorkshire 6-0 after two overs, Lyth with the only boundary so far – off the first ball of the match.

10.56am – The players are on their way out to the middle. Lyth and Bean opening the batting for Yorkshire.

10.31am – The toss has taken place, and Derbyshire have won it and elected to bowl.

Yorkshire team: Lyth, Bean, Masood c, Root, Brook, Hill, Tattersall w, Revis, Thompson, Fisher, Coad.

10.05am – Let’s have a look at the fixtures around the grounds today.

Surrey v Hampshire, Kia Oval

Warwickshire v Nottinghamshire, Edgbaston

Worcestershire v Somerset, Kidderminster

Division Two

Gloucestershire v Middlesex, Seat Unique Stadium

9.05am – Before we get into today’s action, last night Headingley hosted an Antigua and Barbuda Tourist Authority dinner. The island’s four cricketing knights, Sir Andy Roberts, Sir Viv Richards, Sir Curtly Ambrose and Sir Richie Richardson were in attendance and took part in a Q&A.

Richardson was, of course, back at the venue where he spent a season and a half with Yorkshire as overseas player in the early 1990s.

At the end of the evening, Richardson and Ambrose performed with their band, Spirited. Both men were on guitars.

9am – Good morning from a dry and bright Headingley, where Yorkshire are in action against Derbyshire.

We are all set for an 11am start on day one. Yorkshire have drawn two, lost one so far and Derbyshire have drawn all three. Both sit on 28 points.

Yorkshire will hope to replicate last season’s dominance over Derbyshire. They beat them twice in the Championship at Chesterfield and then Scarborough.

Ottis Gibson has named a 13-man squad for this fixture.
