Tom Loten is hoping his first winter abroad in Australia will help him develop as a player and a person.
Loten is debuting in first-class cricket for Yorkshire this week, in their season-ending Specsavers County Championship match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.
He hit a polished 58 on Monday’s first day, sharing 184 for the second wicket with Tom Kohler-Cadmore as Yorkshire posted 261-2 before rain wiped out the final session.
There has been no play since, with day two abandoned and three yet to start and the subject of a 1pm inspection.
York-born Loten, the 20-year-old White Rose Academy captain, heads Down Under on Sunday to play for Melbourne side Prahran CC.
“I fly on Sunday, and my first game is on the following Saturday (against Casey South Melbourne). They were pretty keen for me to get over for the first game.”
“I’m really looking forward to it – it can only help my game really.
“Hopefully I can get into their first grade team and score some runs and come back a better player.
“It’s my first time abroad, so I’ll be learning how to cook and clean and all that stuff. It should be really good for me in terms of life experiences as well as cricket. I can’t wait.”
Loten revealed on Monday how he has banned his immediate family from coming to watch him on grounds of superstition. However, he expects his parents to visit Melbourne at some point over the winter.
12.09pm We are at lunch now, and the blotter is still working away on the outfield. One side of the square is covered and there is an industrial heat lamp on the bowlers’ run up at the Pavilion End.

10.46am A very happy birthday to Yorkshire opener Adam Lyth, who celebrates his 32nd today.
10.21am At Taunton for the title decider between Somerset and Essex, there will be an inspection at 11am following some overnight rain.
10.18am – Lunch There was no play possible before lunch on day three of Yorkshire’s final round Specsavers County Championship match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.
Heavy rain wiped out yesterday’s day two, with further patches of rain overnight and through the morning leaving the outfield incredibly wet.
Umpires Graham Lloyd and Russell Warren called an early lunch at 12pm with an inspection due to 1pm.
If and when play does resume, Yorkshire will be 261-2 in their first innings with Tom Kohler-Cadmore on 165.
9.51am There will be an inspection at 1pm after an early lunch, taken at 12pm. The official word is that it’s damp under foot.
Good morning from Edgbaston, where it is a much brighter scene ahead of day three. However, it seems as if there is still quite a bit of mopping up to do.
I would be surprised if we see any play before lunch if I am honest. However, we should see something today.
