6.56pm – Close – Well, what an opening day that was. Yorkshire have the better of a 17-wicket day, closing on 176-7 in reply to Sussex’s 150. It’s clearly far from an unassailable advantage – nowhere close to it. But it feels like Yorkshire have a significant lead already given the bowler-friendly conditions. If the conditions stay the same, you feel a lead above 50 will provide Sussex with a big issue.

6.52pm – Final over of the day coming up. Yorkshire 175-7 from 48 overs, leading by 25. Revis 0 and Thompson 8.

6.40pm – WICKET! Tattersall caught at third slip off Hunt, 26. It’s 167-7 in the 45th over.

6.37pm – Five overs remaining in the day. We’re 167-6, leading by 17. Tattersall 26 and Revis yet to score.

6.25pm – WICKET! Root trapped lbw by Haines, 67. Yorkshire 159-6 in the 42nd. Excellent knock, and we lead by 9. Revis in now to join Tattersall on 18.

6.20pm – Yorkshire into the lead at 151-5 in the 41st over, and a half-century stand between Root 64 and Tattersall 14. The first of the day. Excellent.

6.16pm – 10 overs remain in the day. Yorkshire 148-5, trailing by 2. Root 62, Tattersall 13.

5.58pm – Root reaches his fifty off 63 balls, and we’re 131-5, trailing by 19. Superb knock in tricky conditions.

Root 50 Sussex

5.49pm – Root has just driven Clark’s seam through the covers for four to move to 46. Glorious. 119-5, and we trail by 31.

5.34pm – WICKET! Wharton trapped lbw by Hudson-Prentice, 21. We’re 101-5 in the 29th over. Tattersall in to join Root, 32.

5.21pm – Only four batters in this match have reached 20. Thankfully, Root 27 and Wharton 20 are two of them. They’ve taken the score to the relative calm of 94-4.

5.19pm – Yorkshire 88-4 after 25 overs of the first-innings in reply to 150. Root 27, Wharton 14. We have 24 overs remaining in the day.

5pm – Useful start to the evening for Yorkshire. Relatively calm considering what we saw in the first two sessions. 73-4 in the 21st over, trailing by 77. Root 25, Wharton 2.

3.43pm – WICKET! Lyth caught on the drive at third slip off Hunt, 14. Yorkshire 31-2 after eight overs. Root in now to join Masood, who has 13.

3.35pm – Yorkshire have survived a couple of vociferous appeals for caught behind and lbw from Robinson and Hunt to advance to 20-1 after six overs. Lyth 7, Masood 9. We’re replying to 150.

2.49pm – WICKET! Six and out pretty much for Robinson. Having whipped Thompson over square-leg at the start of the 43rd over, he’s edged to Lyth at second slip, 7. 149-9 now.

2.37pm – WICKET! Two in the over for Hill – Carson caught behind by Tattersall, 0. Sussex are 136-8 in the 40th over. Four for Hill.

2.33pm – WICKET! Hill gets Lamb caught at third slip by Bean, 3. It’s 136-7. Three wickets apiece for Hill and Coad now. Excellent.

2.22pm – This man has been excellent today. Ben Coad celebrates one of his three wickets. Photo by John Heald.

Ben Coad

2.12pm – WICKET! Hudson-Prentice caught behind, 14, off Coad. It’s 131-6 in the 35th. Coad has three.

2.10pm – Thompson almost pulls off a stunner. Diving high to his right at point, he gets a hand on a fierce Hudson-Prentice, 9, cut at Revis. Saved four. 127-5.

Sussex lunch d1

12.50pm – Ten minutes to lunch. Oh how Yorkshire would love to nip another out before the break. Sussex 95-4 in the 25th, bowled by Leech.

12.40pm – John Heald, the photographer who is down here working for Yorkshire this week, has just piped up in the press box, ‘How far’s Hastings away? The reason I ask is that the first wicket fell to a combination of shirt numbers 10 and 66’.  Very good! Sussex 91-4.

12.31pm – WICKET! What a big moment this could prove to be! Leech gets Pujara caught behind superbly by Tattersall diving to his right in front of first slip, 14. It’s 91-4 in the 21st over.

12.19pm – Leech into the attack to replace Coad (1-27 from nine). Sussex 77-3 after 18 overs.

11.59am – WICKET! Hill again, and it’s Alsop caught at third slip by Bean, 8. Sussex 61-3 in the 14th over. Sussex had the better of the opening exchanges, but Yorkshire asserting themselves now.

11.50am – WICKET! Hill’s introduction does the trick as Lyth takes the catch at second slip. Haines falls for 31. 56-2 in the 12th. Hill strikes with his fourth ball. Pujara in now.

11.46am – Hill into the attack in place of Thompson. Sussex 56-1 after 11.

11.44am – Sussex 56-1 in the 11th over. There looks to be some decent carry in this pitch, and Coad has found the edge of Alsop’s bat. But he’s dropped at first slip by Root on 4. 56-1 in the 11th.

11.28am – WICKET! Clark caught by Root at first slip off Coad, 16. It’s 42-1 in the seventh over. Alsop in now.

Extra bounce did for left-handed Clark, who seemed caught in two minds as to whether to play back or forwards.

11.16am – Sussex have taken five boundaries off the last seven balls from Thompson and Coad. They are 32-0 at the start of the fifth over. There were four boundaries in Thompson’s last over, including four leg byes, and one more at the start of Coad’s ongoing over. Clark and Haines have 14 apiece.

11.02am – Sussex 4-0 after one. Thompson sharing the new ball.

10.59am – And away we go. Toms Clark and Haines opening for Sussex. Coad has the new ball in his hand, bowling from the Cromwell Road End. The pitch looks green. Be interesting to see if it plays as it looks.

10.43am – The live stream is available via the Match Centre tab just above.

10.39am – Yorkshire have made four changes to the team which drew with Glamorgan at Headingley last time out. In come, Hill, Leech, Thompson and Wharton. Out go Bess, Brook, Fisher and Moriarty.

10.33am – Yorkshire have won the toss and will bowl first. It’s an all seam attack for the visitors.

Suss Team

10.26am – The toss isn’t too far away. Shan Masood is out there in the middle, and Ottis Gibson is in conversation with Jayden Seales.

9.17am – Good morning from The 1st Central County Ground, Hove. It’s a gorgeous morning on the South Coast – lovely sunshine and pretty warm too.

The players are just starting to warm-up here. Ottis Gibson and Shan Masood have been out to have a look at the pitch, and there’s a definite green tinge to it.

Sussex sit atop of the Division Two table and Yorkshire sixth, but there’s only an 18-point gap between the two after five matches. Sussex have won two, drawn two and lost one of their five games, while Yorkshire have drawn four and lost one. Perhaps more significantly, Yorkshire are only eight points behind second-placed Middlesex, who hold the other promotion berth.

Yorkshire continue to include England Test star Joe Root – this is set to be his last Championship appearance in the early block of matches. The plan is for him to rest against Northamptonshire next week. Sussex, meanwhile, will include his international team-mate Ollie Robinson, though they will be missing in-form West Indian quick Jayden Seales because of injury.
